Look how the intervention boats pretend to be fighting that fire. The water they spray is not even close to the rig! Look where the water is falling compared to where the rig is.

Yeah but they were helpless because all that water probably got into the two ballasts for the rig and tipped it. WTF did they think water would do? I guess they were trying to cool the superstructure.

God bless the brave people who died trying to keep the rig afloat. They knew if she went under, it would be hell due to the kinked riser, and they died trying to prevent that, one assumes.

maybe the sheer heat coming off that rig was vapourizing the water jets mid air? possibly why they appear short? hell of a blaze, if you've ever stood close to a big bonfire you know it can get uncomfortably hot real quick, so imagine the heat waves there. hellish!

No, that's not it. Look at second 11-12 how far that boat on the right hand side is! The water jet is not even close to the fire. Was this just for show?

This thing was like a giant tower built in reverse. Like other questionable situations, this one also went all the way to the basement.

Maybe the blast killed them all? It is an interestingly simple assumption.

I thought I read that some died because they stayed behind? Some did not evac? If so, their reasoning would be obvious: They knew what would happen if the rig rolled over. Anybody who was on that thing knew what it meant if it became imbalanced.

At least this pic shows some water hitting from the right side.

A Coast Guard man was quoted in some article as saying that the heat was so intense, that it was melting the paint off of the side of the cutters.

The water being sprayed was at least keeping the fires of the spilled oil and diesel fuel on top of the gulf waters from intensifying the heat further.

Probably because it just recently blew up... Next time you be the first one out to check if everything is ok.

Those water jets remind me of the trillions sprayed on the bank collapse.

The jets had as much effect on the rig as the trillions did on the financial superstructure.

Why didn't they send divers under the platform to install cutting charges on the pipeline? The could have cut the pipe clean in two places, detaching it from the rig.

It would have been easy to do, and we'd have a pipe spewing near the surface instead of 5,000 feet under.

what is so weird water does not put out a gas/oil/grease fire.. only spreads it..

Water wouldn't help an oil or gas fire anyway, probably just to keep the surrounding area a bit cooler to help any survivors. Imagine that the high pressure Methane was erupting from the riser pipe with an incredible volume and pressure, then that gas was sucked into the intakes for the generators on the rig. Then they blew up and wiped out all electrical sytems which keep the rig level.

It is really a testament to how much Methane gas is being ejected from the well.
