well the difference with this event is that the flare was caused a hyder flare instead of a regular CME that is caused by a sunspot. I`m not sure if a hyder flare has hit the earth in the past (since recordings began) and I´m not even sure if Nasa knows the differences between these two events. (thats the reason they`re putting so much effort in studying the sun.)
Since there were some power outages in 2003 from a regular CME, it could very well mean that we will face some of the same effects. But there is no way of predicting the severity of the incident until it hits us.

Best case-the best aurora show you are likely to see in your lifetime, and further south or north, depending on your latitude.

Worst case-EMP type damage to all things electrical-think living in the 1800's or further back.

BTW-IF, I do mean IF this is the big one don't expect any warning from PTB, MSM, etc. You are getting all the warning you're likely to get right here.

I am no expert and really looking for more confirmation myself.
