Quoting: Anonymous Coward 958271Looks to me they are really taking this seriously. It is good know that this catastrophy is being taken care of by a competant and caring company like BP. I can't wait my car is running empty to fill her up at the next BB station. Nothing they are doing nothing to stop it ! I think BP is focusing his energy into the defense of the lawsuites which are gonna take place. The oil spill and the coast means shit for them. BP makes almost 20 billion a year, after paying all the taxes. The cost of this little incident is nothing for them. They don't care. All they do is spilling chemicals into the hole, preventing the oil to surface. They hope that the oil eventually either stays hidden or is being moved out into the ocean by the currents. They are gonna drill another hole in august, which should reduce the spill (so they say). Somebody just has reduced the US mexican coast to a moon landscape and these same people are gonna keep on drilling on the same coast. Why don't you vote BP into the white house. Ahh because they already sit there. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 980150 United States 05/24/2010 02:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Got a news flash for you. About 30,000feet below the sea floor is a pool of gas and oil they say is the size of Mt Everest. The blithering idiots at BP drilled a nice steel lined hole somewhere around 10inches (maybe as big as 20inches) in diameter into that highly pressurized area. The pressure at the outlet of that hole near the sea floor..is a MINIMUM of about 14,000 pounds per square inch. (basic physics enables that calculation) The pressure could be much higher... some have said as high as 100,000psi but I am going with around 30,000. The equipment they had on the sea floor was only rated at about 15,000psi. First stupid mistake other than drilling the well into that reservoir from an offshore platform in the first place. So no matter whether you are on the sea floor..or in a 300ft deep crater on the sea floor, you have a relatively small pipe with HUGE pressure behind it. Quoting: expat2368There is nothing you can fill that crater with that will stop a flow at that much pressure. So what will happen if it is not stopped is that it will flow until the pressure above and below is equalized.. and water will flow down into the well where the temperature is over 400 degrees... it will turn into steam and who knows what will happen after that. I believe the only option is to drill a hole about 3 or 4 thousand feet deep next to the existing well.. have the military put a low yield nuclear device at the bottom...seal off the hole above it and detonate it. That will shatter the surrounding rock, collapse the out of control well next to it and stop the flow. The Russians have done it 5 times successfully. The pressure at the seafloor will basically be the same in a 21" riser or 100 foot pool, you just won't have that cool jetting effect like your nozzle on the garden hose. Turn it on full without the nozzle, and a nice steady stream runs out. Put the nozzle on, less water comes out, but bigger show... As for killing this thing, it is a physics calc, but it also requires knowing where the fluid is travelling. Best case, it originates low in the main production string. That allows us the best chance to pump enough mud to equalize pressure. Really, the best way to do this would be straight down the BOP. Cut the riser off the top, run in with a bullet shaped pumpoff sub, and start tripping in 4" pipe. Get downhole, and start pumping heavy mud, the flowing well will cirulate the mud, you just have to pump faster. Lots of mud, lots of horsepower, but doable. BTW, water will not boil at 400 degrees at insitu pressures (thermodynamics) |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 951298 United States 05/24/2010 03:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The idea of the foam (again this is just conceptual; I don't know that such a product exists, but I don't know of a principled reason why it could not) is that it could set in the upper part of the crater, once the fluid flow has spread out somewhat, decompressed, and perhaps even gotten clogged somewhat by methane hydrate crystals that form as temperature and pressure drop. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 913496It's always easier to say nothing will work than to come up with ideas that might. Mine probably won't work either, but I have hope. If foam had a chance of working than concrete could work also and it is already available. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 792493view sources: [link to www.correntewire.com] [link to monkeyfister.blogspot.com] One poster writes: If the riser has failed and oil and gas are short-circuiting around the annulus of the borehole, this already bad situation will get a thousand-fold worse in a very short period of time. What will happen is the rushing fluids will erode the borehole, transporting the soft sea-floor sediments away, creating a giant 300-foot deep crater down to the point of failure. This will further decrease the back-pressure (restriction on the pressure) and as that eases the flow-rate will increase, further eroding what is left of the borehole casing. It is a very vicious circle. This isn't uneducated conjecture, it is based on my experience with flowing wells. I think very few people have any idea how bad this will get. The damage that is imminent is actually worse than in your worst imaginings. It's quite possible that the entire eco-system of the Gulf of Mexico may collapse. Is there any other news about a new MAJOR eruption? That`s not the worst i imagined and certainly not worse than it. I was hoping for a global doom. LOL ME TOO. BLOOD LIKE RAIN FALL DOWN |

But they are looking into it though: Barack Obama sends nuclear experts to tackle BP's Gulf of Mexico oil leak. The US has sent a team of nuclear physicists to help BP plug the "catastrophic" flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico from its leaking Deepwater Horizon well, as the Obama administration becomes frustrated with the oil giant's inability to control the situation.
