Is this your experience? Case in point on one of my not quite so successful OOBEs I got stuck in-between. I noticed the transfer of consciousness (for a better word) from the physical into the astral with a short blackout but than looking at my physical noticing that the astral was partially still stuck in the physical. I decided to slip back in turned around and went to sleep.

On my first planned OOBE I ended up looking at my other hands. I then slipped back into the physical, then out again looking at my hands. Don't know how many times I did this but eventually those other hands started to deteriorate, the fabric developing tiny holes increasing to blotches until they were gone - much like a soap bubble before it burst.
Later on I went to visit the guy that had taken over my shift - afraid he would see me..LOL

A couple of times I had to come back unexpectedly and upon waking I noticed this very uncomfortable feeling between my shoulder blades - much like a burning sensation.

OOBEs are generated through intent much as the body/vehicle that carries your awareness.
