If 16: 30 GMT is right it means it was afternoon in Europe and 10: 30 am in the East Coast and early morning near 7 am in the West Coast.

What was the size of the reading?

it may have to do with the recent Hyder flare releasing a huge magnetic storm onto the Earth, but have nothing except this data to back that up. Maybe some kind of graviton type wave?

Sounds like North Korea may be testing an underground nuclear weapon...

The oil-spill is going on at an incredible rate, right? Usually, when they drill oil, they replace with water. It's probably not happening, so there is a big land mass that is suspended over nothing.
OP did say he was near oil-spill and that the movement was worst in his part of the world...

If it had been anything physical, like say the oil field displacement, there would have been a time delay of hours to reach the whole world. This happened in MINUTES! The only thing I can think of that is even remotely plausible is some type of cosmic ray.

Pretty sure it was the 6.5 in Brazil they have listed at 16:18 and the farther you get from the epicenter the longer and smaller the waves are on the seismograph.

COSTA Rica's Arenal volcano has erupted, spewing geysers of lava, ash and toxic gases from its crater and forcing the evacuation of the national park where it is located.

These are all the theories that came out to explain it.

A 6.0 in the gulf now would be disastrous.

Rare Earthquake Shakes Gulf of Mexico

September 11, 2006

The strongest earthquake to hit the Gulf of Mexico in 33 years shook the southern United States Sunday, prompting thousands of calls to authorities.

The magnitude 6.0 temblor, centered about 330 miles (530 kilometers) southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana, occurred at 8:56 a.m. local time (map of Louisiana). It was felt in parts of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

Earthquakes Damage, if any, was too light to be reported. The earthquake was also too weak to cause a tsunami.

And Sunday's quake should have little to no effect on development of recently discovered oil reserves deep beneath the Gulf, says Randy Cox, an associate professor of earth science at the University of Memphis in Tennessee.

Powerful earthquakes are rare but not unheard of in the Southeast U.S.

In 1879 an earthquake near St. Augustine, Florida, rattled dishes off shelves and cracked plaster. And in 1886 a magnitude 7.3 temblor killed 60 people in Charleston, South Carolina, and rang church bells as far away as St. Augustine.

Unusual Occurrence

Most earthquakes take place near the edges of the tectonic plates that make up Earth's crust. Stress builds as the plates slowly but steadily collide.

The mammoth tsunami-generating quake in Indonesia on December 26, 2004, occurred at such a plate boundary.

The recent Gulf of Mexico earthquake, however, occurred in the middle of a plate, not at an edge.

Such "mid-plate" earthquakes probably represent release of long-term stress originating from distant forces, the U.S. Geological Survey says on its Earthquake Hazards Program Web site, which tracks earthquakes around the globe.

The earthquake occurred along a region known as the Cuba fracture zone, Cox says.

A magnitude 5.2 temblor that occurred on February 10, 2006, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) south of New Orleans may have involved the same fault zone, he adds.

The source of stress is far out in the Atlantic Ocean, where plate tectonics are causing the seabed to spread. This drives the North American plate westward, compressing it.

"All of eastern North America is in similar compression, presumably for the same reason," Cox said by email.

A few weeks ago, Cox published a study of the tectonics of southern North America in the GSA Bulletin, a journal of the Geological Society of America.

"This thrusting event is consistent with prehistoric fault movements we found in the onshore Gulf Coast region," he said by email.

"Until recently it was presumed that the eastern North American plate had a transition from compression in the interior to extension—or stretching—in the Gulf, but we've changed the stress maps of late, and this earthquake fits right in."

Earthquake History of Florida

Although Florida is not usually considered to be a state subject to earthquakes, several minor shocks have occurred there. Only one of these caused damage. Additional shocks of doubtful seismic origin also are listed in earthquake documents.

A shock occurred near St. Augustine, in the northeast part of the State, in January 1879. The Nation's oldest permanent settlement, founded by Spain in 1565, reported that heavy shaking knocked plaster from walls and articles from shelves. Similar effects were noted at Daytona Beach, 50 miles south. At Tampa, the southernmost point of the felt area, the trembling was preceded by a rumbling sound at 11:30 p.m. Two shocks were reported in other areas, at 11:45 p.m. and 11:55 p.m. The tremor was felt through north and central Florida, and at Savannah, Georgia.

In January 1880, Cuba was the center of two strong earthquakes that sent severe shock waves through the town of Key West, Florida. The tremors occurred at 11 p.m. on January 22 and at 4 a.m. on the 23rd. At Buelta Abajo and San Christobal, Cuba, many buildings were thrown down and some people were killed.

The next tremor to be felt by Floridians also centered outside the State. It was the famous Charleston, South Carolina, shock in August 1886. The shock was felt throughout northern Florida, ringing church bells at St. Augustine and severely jolting other towns along that section of Florida's east coast. Jacksonville residents felt many of the strong aftershocks that occurred in September, October, and November 1886.

On June 20, 1893, Jacksonville experienced another slight shock, apparently local, that lasted about 10 seconds. Another minor earthquake shook Jacksonville at 11:15 a.m., October 31, 1900. It caused no damage.

A sudden jar caused doors and windows to rattle at Captiva in November 1948. The apparent earthquake was accompanied by sounds like distant heavy explosions. Captiva is located on Captiva Island, in the Gulf west of Fort Myers.

On November 18, 1952, a slight tremor was felt by many at Quincy, a small town about 20 miles northwest of Tallahassee. Windows and doors rattled, but no serious effects were noted. One source notes, "The shock interfered with writing of a parking ticket." It didn't say in what way.

The three Florida shocks of doubtful seismic origin rumbled through the Everglades - La Belle - Fort Myers area in July 1930, Tampa in December 1940, and the Miami - Everglades - Fort Myers area in January 1942. Most authorities attribute these incidents to blasting, but a few contend they were seismic.

In September 10 2006 there was a 6.0 in the Florida contintal slope it was felt widely across the south as a slight tremor.

If that oil reserve in the gulf of mexico is the size of the state of Montana........when it empties out it is going to fill that space with something.

Florida......the entire state is nothing but a large sand-bar..and it will sink just like any other sink hole.

Florida will collapse.....to fill in the oilcano space.

You people in Florida better get the hell outta there while the gettin is good.
