Lucid One User ID: 981747 United Kingdom 05/26/2010 11:04 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There is news reported in South Korea that we do not have in western news sources. My contacts there tell me that the ship that was "torpedoed" by a North Korean submarine was actually participating in a joint military exercise with American and South Korean vessels that were in close proximity. When the wreckage was found, they dredged up a rusty piece of equipment that was claimed to be a North Korean torpedo. It was completed rusted and in pieces, yet, there was fresh magic marker on it claiming it was #1 in a North Korean style. South Korean media and people jokingly are saying that the North Koreans have the world's greatest magic marker that does not disintegrate in sea water or rust. Also, there is fear in Seoul that the North will attack the city with 25 million people living in and around it with missiles that can easily reach their targets. People there are panicking. The situation is escalating. The US is bound by treaty to defend South Korea in an attack. Japan has stated the same intention. It is going to get messy there very soon. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 682111They will not be able to feed their troops to sustain a war. If they start a war then they will instantly reduce that starving population by tens of millions in a matter of days. Easiest way to reduce starvation is to reduce the number of people starving. What quicker way than war? And on top of that Kim Jong can claim this as his great stand against the West before he passes. |

The 53-65 became operational in 1965, while the 53-65K and 53-65M both became operational in 1969. The 53-65KE is an exported version. They are members of the Type 53 torpedos. China received an unknown number of 53-65KE torpedoes from Russia after purchasing 4 Kilo class submarines in the 1990s. [edit] Specifications Primary function: High explosive torpedo for sinking surface ships Power plant: 53-65 and 53-65M: Kerosene-hydrogen peroxide turbine 53-65K: Kerosene-oxygen turbine Length: 23.6 ft (7.2 m) Weight: 4,563 lb–4,630 lb (2,070 kg–2,300 kg) Diameter: 21 in (533 mm) Range: 53-65: 18,000 metres (20,000 yd) 53-65K: 19,000 metres (21,000 yd) 53-65M: 22,000 metres (24,000 yd) Speed: 53-65 and 53-65K: 45 kt (52 mi/h, 83 km/h) 53-65M: 44 kt (51 mi/h, 81 km/h) Guidance system: Wake-homing Warhead: 661 lb (300 kg) high explosive Operational since: 53-65: 1965 53-65K and 53-65M: 1969 Instead of using active or passive homing as other torpedoes do, the 53-65 torpedoes use wake homing, which, upon finding the wake of a ship, turns to follow the wake to guide itself to the ship. The torpedoes have no way of telling which way the target ship is headed when they reach the wake, so they aren't as effective as other means of homing. To date, there have been no reports of a countermeasure that can confuse these torpedoes, making them very successful when they do home on to a ship. The Royal Navy's fascination with Trimaran vessels, with trimaran hulls at one time even being proposed for its new aircraft carriers, may be in part due to the desire to reduce the wake of their ships and their vulnerability to wake homing torpedoes.[citation needed] |

As in times past, someday we will either be reading about some now declassified report that we came within mere seconds of armed conflict, were it not for some pure stroke of luck. Or, we will not get lucky this time, and some shit-for-brains general, colonel, or even a captain will get panicky and pull the trigger launching a massive war that will only be stopped by a desperate call from all the uninvolved nations, or which will escalate quickly into total warfare. |

Beijing reminded Pyongyang that "peace and stability" are vital for the Korean Peninsula after an investigation implicated the North in the sinking of the South Korean Navy corvette Cheonan. [link to english.chosun.com] Not often China says things like that. Will N.Korea listen? Nope, if nothing else it'll just piss em' off more. |

The NK subs cannot even USE German torpedos.....They are fitted to fire the RUSSIAN ones that were sold to CHINA..... The "official report" ays a NK "STYLE" torpedo. So we know China bought an unspecified number of torpedoes from Russia in the 90s. We know that NK Sang-O Class subs CANNOT fire GERMAN torpedoes. The more I dig the more fishy it gets. I am beginning to believe NK. |

North Korea denied any involvement and called the investigation´s outcome a fabrication, warning it would wage an "all-out war" if Seoul takes any countermeasures against Pyongyang. There are five levels of Watchcon, intensifying the degree and frequency of intelligence gathering and analysis each time it is raised. South Korea is currently on Watchcon-3. Watchcon-2 would signify a vital threat. It would be the fifth time that South Korea and the U.S. have done so, with the last level elevation in May 2009 when North Korea conducted its second nuclear test. But the South Korean Navy is already on its highest alert near the contested Yellow Sea border with the North, where the Cheonan was attacked and sank. South Korea is now in the process of determining how to react to the provocation. One step was the emergency meeting of the National Security Council (NSC), which was held by President Lee Myung-bak on Friday morning. The NSC is the highest-level presidential advisory body which includes the most important ministers and convened for the fist time since last years nuclear test by N. Korea |
