Re: TOP KILL WILL NOT WORK
The weight of the MUD has to equal or be greater than the force of the well. They are losing a load of pressure through those leaks. They haven't been able to get enough MUD weight in the well to overcome the well pressure yet, because if they had it would be cement time and you wouldn't see anything leaking from those holes. Time will tell, but it looks to be in vain.

good post and you are thinking it out

after they started with what they are calling the Top Kill they had to know the well DP pressure

they worked for a week rebuilding the BOP the best they could with the ROVs

they knew that they would hit the BOP and piping with extra pressure

they are now pumping the mud at a positive pressure vs well head DP pressure allowing mud to flow positive into the well head

of course your going to see massive mud flow at a higher rate than the oil flow you saw before they started this process

they are trying to weight the well head to gain some well head pressure control and then start the cement process

they have heavy mud and they also have a well that because it is positive venting is as substantialy higher pressure than the sea at that depth

as such in order to stop the leak they need to push in enough mud to overcome the Delta P of the well

fine if they start hafway down the "straw" as the positive pressure willpush the mud up the straw until sufficient mud head is in place.

Hwever they are startin near the uncapped top of the straw.

i.e. near the opening to sea

how are they going to pump enough material in to overcome the oil pressure when they have an opening nearer to the mud insertion point that is at far lower pressure. All the mud will take the path of least resistance and flow straight back out of the lower pressure opening.

great question that cuts to the core of the issue

the flow restriction of the BOP has to be smaller than than the well

a balance of flow

if the vents we see leaking on the live cams or smaller than the flow being pumped that would mean the excess flow would be going into the well head

do I have those facts ? no

I would hope BP does and more is going into the well head than leaking out the vents or leaks we are seeing

Thanks ice, I'm across the gulf here at Gulf Shores, so I hope they get it stopped and maybe clean up what's coming on shore or left in the water. This has been and will be some more job to undertake.

Exactly. I don't know who Rachael Maddow is, but I thought this was an excellent video. The correlations between the two events are eerie. And nothing has changed except the depth.

Well I wonder why they have to go out and drill in such deep waters in the first place. It couldn't be because of the environmental nazi's that fought so hard to keep the drilling away from our shores could it?

Bentonite is not sticky, just slimy like clay when wet.... It is used in hydocolator hot packs. I'm not sure how it interacts with oil.

Just looking at the plumes isn't very reassuring yet, though.

The mud is inching down the hole, it seems.

Sorry to spoil your doom but it will work.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 982418

Ummm, the Top Kill operation failed back then with shallower waters, less pressures behind the oil, same pipe diameters.

Only an idiot would believe it will work this time when it CLEARLY has failed then. Why would it be so different now? It's not. This shit WILL continue until the relief well is drilled.

End game...by then, 1.587 billion gallons will spill into the GoM. 5.88 million gal/day (140k bbl/day) for 9 months.

That is enough to kill 1,587,000,000,000,000 or 1,587 TRILLION gallons of seawater.

1,587 TRILLION gallons of water dead with NO LIFE. Un-fucking-real!!!

History Lesson for ROV's

In the 1950s the Royal Navy used "Cutlet", a remotely operated submersible, to recover practice torpedoes.

The US Navy funded most of the early ROV technology development in the 1960s into what was then named a "Cable-Controlled Underwater Recovery Vehicle" (CURV). This created the capability to perform deep-sea rescue operation and recover objects from the ocean floor, such as a nuclear bomb lost in the Mediterranean Sea after the 1966 Palomares B-52 crash. Building on this technology base; the offshore oil & gas industry created the work class ROVs to assist in the development of offshore oil fields. More than a decade after they were first introduced, ROVs became essential in the 1980s when much of the new offshore development exceeded the reach of human divers.

Yeah, they became ESSENTIAL in 1980....after the Gulf of Mexico had a blow out.
