What I heard yesterday was that the flotilla was bringing embargoed items like building supplies. Not food, which is available in Gaza (not embargoed) but not weapons either. Stuff the Gaza inhabitants could use to make themselves a bit more self-sufficient.

Proper channels would have failed, because these items are on the embargo list. Less than 200 different items are allowed, not including building supplies and other things the flotilla was bringing.

It hit Israel's soft spot, and no doubt it was intended to. Gazans should be able to obtain these items. There's no way that attacking the flotilla, in international waters no less, is justifiable.

Well, they'll have to. The problem they will have is that it's pretty damn unlikely that the US will allow anything more than a slap on the wrist.
