Annan warns U.S. on Iran
[link to www.usatoday.com]
By Barbara Slavin, USA TODAY
UNITED NATIONS — U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan warned the Bush administration that the Security Council might deadlock if asked to punish Iran for its nuclear program.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan says of relations with the U.S.: "I´m afraid that it has gone sour again."
By Laurent Gillieron, AP

The United States and Britain have called for Iran to be brought before the Security Council if it carries out threats to resume efforts to make nuclear fuel. The United States and Britain believe the fuel could be used for bombs, while Iran contends that it is to generate power. China and Russia, which have strong economic ties to Iran, might veto any push to sanction Iran, Annan suggested in interviews with USA TODAY. Iran, Azerbaijan call for expansion of defense cooperation

16/05/2005 04:36

TEHRAN (IRNA) -- Visiting Azeri Defense Minister Safar Abiyev conferred here Saturday with his Iranian counterpart Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani on expansion of defense and military cooperation between the two countries.

Abiyev´s visit is taking place at the invitation of his Iranian counterpart.

At the meeting, the two sides called for implementation of already signed agreements between the two countries.

According to Public Relations Department of Defense Ministry, the first round of official talks between the two ministers kicked off Saturday afternoon.

Restoration of peace and stability in the region depends on adoption of independent defense and security policies by the countries in the region, underlined the two ministers.

Highlighting the two sides´ deeply rooted cultural, historical and religious ties, Shamkhani said this has led to further expansion of defense and military cooperation between the two countries. "Our defense and military cooperation is not against any third country," Shamkhani said adding that no country can affect such cooperation."

On issues pertaining to the Caspian Sea, he said, the Islamic Republic of Iran considers the Caspian Sea as the sea of friendship and peace and is of the opinion that restoration of durable peace and stability requires collective cooperation, mutual trust and avoidance of arms race.

The Azeri minister, for his part, referred to exchange of visits between the two sides´ officials as well as the recent visit by Rear Admiral Shamkhani to Azerbaijan and said the two sides officials are determined to further broaden mutual defense and military cooperation.

3215 Annan and Bush both need to step aside.. Annan hasn´t been directly linked to the oil-for food thing his son was, but Bush is directly linked to an illegal war that was based on lies and misinformation.

The UN needs an overhaul.. and Bush needs a wake up call.

Re: Annan warns U.S. on Iran
I´ve always viewed the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, as a person of integrity and a voice for moderation - a consumate diplomat - in the vociferous world of national interest, or perhaps more precisely corporate interest.

In my opinion, Kofi Annan, is a very courageous man when he decides to stay on the job when he is under fire from the Bush Administration and members of Congress.

I do hope he has the vision and the persistence to stay.

We need Kofi Annan as the spokesperson for the World body, desperately!!!

And, I hope and pray greatly, that the US Senate doesn´t decide of confirm Mr John Boulton as the next United States ambassador to the United Nations. If they do, that would be a disaster!! imo. Boulton is said to be abrasive diplomatically, and against the United Nations as a forum for discussion and conciliation in the international arena.
