however this is not a small number. Royal Navy has 6 frigates total at the moment. frigate class is de facto the top ship of world's navy classifications. cruisers are almost same, but only a bit larger and with more range.

a frigate today is a ship that can do all tasks - Surface, AA, ASW, screening, anything. neat package really.

and on another sidenote, a frigate passed southwards where i am in eastern turkey last night, a friend reported. also, there is a major air base here, and it was VERY active, planes landing and taking off all night.
