Part of Alabama Gulf Coast Waters Shut Down For Fishing - Oil to Hit Pensacola and Destin Beaches Tomorrow (Update on page 5)
First off, I don't have a link. Don't ask for one.

Second, this is for recreational fishing, both inshore and offshore.

I do PR work (and write articles, etc..), and I just got off the phone with a local fisherman from Orange Beach (near Mobile). He said the oil is within 6 miles of the beaches.

All the Captains who are fishing have been churning up tar balls in their engines. However, if it were up to them, they'd put up with the engine sludge to keep fishing. The problem is BP, EPA and others who will mandate that they stop (for their own safety of course).

All the Captains have reported seeing helicopters flying over the oil slicks, and those helicopters are basically there for legal purposes; not for cleanup. (Reporting on the size, spread, and thickness of the oil so they can mandate when and where to make off limits).

Now, BP gave the tourism departments large sums of money to hire people like me and advertise to bring people to the Gulf. The problem though, was I didn't get started sending things out until last week, because of all the paperwork and legal work involved. So, that means that people will have booked (for the earliest) their trips this week. And if they close the Gulf waters, then all those trips will be canceled (nullifying all the work I've done)

Now I even had a trip planned to go to the Gulf to make more pictures and videos, but I've already canceled all those plans because of these reports. We were told that we had until about July before the oil would hit the beaches here, but that seems to have been an optimistic estimation from BP.

So again, I don't have a link, just words from the mouths of multiple Captains. And most all of them say it is very likely for Alabama Gulf waters to be closed indefinitely starting tomorrow, and by the end of the week at the latest.

would this include beaches from what you hear, or just the open water? Also does this include the entire alabama shore, or just a specific area?

I told glp, I'd provide oil updates when I get them, since I'm usually one of the first to know.

Of course, I will never put this in a press release, because that goes against the purpose of my job. But I figured GLP would like to know.

The US FWS or the ADCNR would be the ones who put out the press releases (to the AP) on closing fishing, so keep a lookout for those. (Chances are I'll be the first to know about those as well).

Hopefully, Mobile Bay will be active for longer than the beaches. They have plans to try and barricade the mouth of the bay to hold the oil off.

Open water for tomorrow (or this week), but the shores would be soon to follow I'm guessing.

The state pier should be open longer than any other place, because the state will fight to keep it open. (It's the longest pier on the Gulf of Mexico). But once the fumes get bad, they'll have to shut that down as well.

You should be fine I think. I don't know how fast the oil is moving, but Destin is still about 70 miles away. And I doubt any oil will hit there within the next 2 weeks unless a major storm comes through.

Only if you're staying in Destin for a few months. It should be sunny by this weekend there. And the beaches should be fine. If I were you, I'd just enjoy your last trip to the Gulf beach and not worry about the oil.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 988854

The first week of the disaster, all fishing should have been open with all limits done away. But we (the state) has to get approval from the FWS before that could happen.

I think the FWS intentionally took their time for spite, because the non-commercial fishermen here regularly break the limit size. There (used to be) a big debate on the quality and numbers of red snapper here, which was the main reason the FWS had been reducing the limit size.

As usual the FWS was using faulty data to try and prove that red snapper was endangered, when in reality the numbers of that species was higher than ever (thanks to local restoration efforts). It was so high, that those fish were destroying the ecosystem by eating all the other fish.

So I know a lot of fishermen were intentionally catching (and not releasing) much more red snapper than they were allowed to try and cull the numbers down to save the ecosystem. This in turn caused FWS to add harsher limits to the amount they could catch and shorten the season. (Of course commercial fishermen who lobby to the FWS weren't affected.)

So it's not just Obama, because this has been an ongoing battle for years between recreational fishermen and the FWS. But I'm sure Obama had a hand in doing this as punishment for states who didn't vote for him.
