This thread just keeps getting better with all the contributions.

I am flashing back to the book called "The Tao of Physics" which I read over 30 years ago. I was on this path once, but got sidetracked into playing the game. Marriage, job, kids, possessions, etc.

Another book I read many years ago - "The Crack in the Cosmic Egg" .

This paradigm shift you speak of has been brewing for a great while now. I think I understand how it is optional, as I reflect upon my own life - seeing that I was once on the trail of this paradigm shift and somewhere made the choice to become embroiled and preoccupied with the mundane. Perhaps this dis - ease I have been experiencing in the middle of my life is a hunger to retrace my steps and go back to that fork in the road where I turned away from this quest for deeper understanding, and instead fell into line with the way of all men.
