We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less. These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. Gross Generalizations only do one thing: they show how narrow minded in the person doing the judging. The entire culture we live in today was shaped by the actions of the BBs. The music you listen to, the types of foods available in the grocery, the types of films, books, the technology, the medicine, everything that has expanded the western world was done by the efforts and ingenuity of the Baby Boomers. Wars, violence, hate, smut, over-crowding, competition for jobs and within the workplace....those have always been a part of western culture; the most un-cultured part of it. They are not something that occurred because of the Baby Boomers, nor are they something that did not exist at the time the Boomers were growing up. You are angry and figured the Boomers were a good target. GROW UP, kid... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 988453 United States 06/05/2010 01:15 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Honestly I don't know about Austrailia post WWII op but as for the USA we were basically the only industrial nation whose infrastructure wasn't destroyed. From that position we were able to ride along pretty nicely, the GI bill got a lot of vets educations, and the 50s hummed along pretty well most of the decade. Mom stayed home while dad earned enough with one income to buy a house and a car. Kids were fed and clothed if not overindulged. There was the darkside of racism and sexism -- and of course the boom raised the specter of overpopulation. And pollution was to become terrible as a byproduct of production. Food was relatively expensive. And notice I said A car -- only the rich had more than one. I grew up into this -- the 60s and 70s. I saw the civil rights movement, the women's libbers, and the big ecological push. Abortion came in because they really believed overpopulation was a problem back then. And it is. When I was old enough to be aware the world population was 3 billion. I saw it turn 4, 5, and 6 billion -- and very soon we'll have seven billion. By 2050 projections are 10 billion. There simply aren't enough accessible affordable resources to provide for that many people. We all see an unprecedented global crisis in the next couple of decades; it's inevitable. War, famine and/or disease are coming. The herd will be culled. As for the USA we helped build Japan back into superpower status after the war. The Marshall plan rebuilt Europe. We transformed from an industrial to an information/service economy. The factories, sweatshops, foundries etc. we used to have to suffer in are overseas now, building and developing other economies. There is no doubt we overindulged. But as has been pointed out, we didn't know all the risks. We did everything to the max, and had a blast. Decades down the road, well, we're paying for it. The sex and drugs are things of the past, lol, but we still have our rock and roll! When then stuff hits the fan Stairway to Heaven will still be playing someplace. Has western civilization peaked? Probably. It may have peaked back in the 50s or 60s for all I know. But each of us try and make the best of what we can, with what we have. Yes, debt is bad, but it's a fact of life we have to deal with. Probably eventually at the point of a gun. Live and learn. We did the best we could with the information we had. There wasna revolution in the late 60s, and once the mystery door was opened it could never be closed again. Pandora's box. What to suggest? Be of service. Get a teaching credential. Or a counseling certificate. This world is unsustainable on it's present course, but if you're the caring type at least you can help a couple people along the way. Health care will continue to be a bourgeoning field. Who knows, maybe you can slip some of us suffering elderly boomers a Mickey and pit us out of your misery lol. I can't complain. I've had a good life, even when I didn't appreciate it. I feel I've seen and done about all there is. Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. The mystery doors all opened; it feels good to relax and settle in. Nesting someone said. Very comfortable. I for one will be happy to sit in my recliner and let the Xers take the ball and run with it :-). They can apply all our knowledge and experience, it's not like we've been tight-lipped about our lives. We share everything we've learned. Ultimately will it help? Not much. But our hearts are in the right place. The world hasn't been bad to us -- and we did the best we could with what we had to work with. |

They are the most selfish, judgmental, lazy, greedy fucks ever. I can always tell a boomer at the grocery. They are the ones that roll their carts straight down the middle, leaving room for no one else, while they scan the shelves for their favorite things oblivious to anyone else around them. When you ask them to leave a little room for others they get indignant - as if everyone owed them something. Anonymous Coward User ID: 956872 United Kingdom 06/05/2010 06:00 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I am 40, so an older gen x person. My biggest problems was that the world had moved on and my baby boomer parents hadn't realised. I was told work hard at school and get good qualifications, you will leave school get an apprenticeship and have a job for life. Work hard, get promoted, save some and pay into a pension. I did work hard and get good qualifications and I had to apply for 50 jobs until I managed to start an apprenticeship. Then I went to college in the evenings and then did a university degree part time. I was told save up and buy a house, so I didn't go out and saved a deposit. Then the house prices went up the bottom of the market was now 8 times my salary. So I worked hard 14 hours a day 5 to 7 days a week for years and my parents tell me I shouldn't work more than 8 hours a day, they told me to work hard. But I was promoted a few times, but financially there wasn't much reward. Then there were the take overs and buy outs and each time more work and less money. But I see the baby boomers doing alright and keeping all management jobs. And today, well I am 40 have a modest house with a mortgage and modest car and the bills paid. But my wife has to work too. My mum stayed at home and we had a brand new car and two holidays a year. My last holiday was in 1992. I have no savings or pension! |

My dad's dad died when he was 14, he went to 'Nam, my mom divorced him when he got back, his siblings refused to do their part with grandma's elder care so he got stuck with it all for 20 years. He had to pass up career oportunities to look after her and it was like life passed him by while he took care of her. He died when he was 58 and he was the nicest, kindest, least materialistic, most selfless man I ever knew. He did nothing earth shaking here. A lot of people looked down on him because he was poor, but he was the salt of the earth. The world would be a better place if there were nore people like him of every generation. He was wise, generous, and I miss him like I could never miss anyone else. He left a huge hole in my heart. Heart of the heroes, ride. BB's had little to do with the way things were planned back then, those were the hidden hand WW2 guys who were in power who designed this future. Think tanks feeding the elite with social and economic designs that they put in place to control the future. Who Sold Out ? One thing that some BB's did was bring you the consciousness revolution that helped wake up millions of sleepwalkers to the lie of this world. You are experiencing GLP inner info because of the ground work laid previously by BB's and the broken barricades they smashed through, otherwise many would still be wondering if "The Price is Right". Count your blessings that we now know. There are sell outs in every generation look for the ones in your own. Be a do bee or don't bee it's your choice. |

Take a look at ALL the politicians you have elected. THEY ARE ALL BABY BOOMERS YOU IDIOT! If they are such a bunch of dumbasses why are you all electing them to run the country? Baby boomers make up almost the entire congressional body. You want to generalize, how about this: The entire country has so many lazy, unmotivated sheep that they can't wait to pawn off leadership responsibilities to ANYONE willing to take the job. No matter if they have no experience. Which brings us to our current idiot in charge obama. Americans are so inept at educating themselves, and so desperate for a handout they elect the person who 'sounds' the best, the smoothest talker. mkguyver User ID: 990072 United States 06/05/2010 12:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Not as easy as you may think: My parents were depression era youth, this forever changed their lives, not unlike some of today's youth that will never forget today's economy. As children my siblings and I didn't get many of the materialistic things out peers got. Plus, the vast majority of meals our family ate were cooked at home, rarely did we go out to eat. All six of us children also went to work at sixteen or seventeen years of age just to have basics from bicycles, records, and cars. No college tuition either which meant college waited until we could pay for it ourselves. I actually remember missing a few birthdays, they just came and went without notice. This is just an example of how other baby boomers may have lived throughout the fifties, sixties & seventies. Quoting: mkguyver 990072So, NO I don't think all boomer had it fucking easy.
