iam on vista right now i have run windows 7 on this same comp it all on how you set up in the first place and what is in your start up folder if you have a lot of background things running it will slow down any os

It's different in that it gives the perception of security (encryption and etc) however it has built in backdoors which render the security flawed and your encryption keys easily accessible to anyone who knows where to look...

I hate it when people are stubborn. There IS NO REASON to continue using XP when Windows 7 is available. Sure, I wouldn't uninstall XP, but installing XP and formatting Windows 7 is bordering on insanity. Stubbornness is good to a point, but jeez, I hope this stubborness doesn't apply to other areas of your life, like getting a job

No, there ARE performance upgrades. Newer, modern cpu's and hardware are better optimized on Windows 7; it takes better advantage of multi core cpu's. Windows 7 will run faster than XP on multi core CPU's.

Your typical quad core cpu on a desktop that is quickly becoming the standard will allow you to run WIndows 7 faster than XP

I agree, Windows 7 is faster, but it has DRM (Digital Rights Management) built in the OS. I am not a fan of DRM especially tied to the OS. I am running Windows 7 and it is better than Vista, but not as good as XP. It is the future of Microsoft, XP will die once Enterprises start to get off of it. Last time I checked, they were in no hurry to get off of XP.

Now I do love Linux. I am a Open Source fan and I will try Open Source, before I purchase software. I have tried most of all the flavors of Linux available and I am currently seeking a Redhat Certification. Ubuntu/Mint would be my first choice, followed by SuSe for hardware support and Redhat for rock solid stability.

why did they just have to make a new os when xp could have just been upgraded? pushers pushing high def is why. dont get me wrong xp sucks but most are forced into using windows. what was that about apple smashing competition?

of course microsoft isnt gonna make the 'ultimate' os for casual and hardcore users as that would lead to bankruptcy. same reason ford didnt stick with the model-t. if he had they could have a 'super' car by now but they wouldnt have made so much money.

Well of course they are out to make money, but erasing windows 7 and installing xp makes absolutely no sense. Even if WIndows came out with the ultimate operating system, I would bet that there would still be a stubborn bunch of people that would still stick to XP. They don't even consider anything else.

I work on an IT help desk and deal with Microsoft products all the time. Windows 7 is simultaneously almost the same as Vista, AND way better.

I still used XP at home up until a few months ago, and would recommend sticking with XP for most people unless you are extremely prone to spyware/trojan infections. XP is a liability to those that can't seem to understand what not to click on.

Currently using Arch Linux myself. I recommend that any linux-heads check it out. It has a great philosophy of do-it-yourselfnewss, good documentation, uncluttered, and a great package management system (pacman).

It has a BSD style init, making it easier to configure than most Linux. Although, I must warn you, it is installed as a basic package with only the text terminals. You must configure it from there to have a GUI and whatever else you need. This ensures that you end up with a system where you know exactly what is installed on it.

I had previous used Ubuntu, and never quite "got" several things about linux. After setting up Arch linux (using the wonderful arch wiki beginners guide), I now feel like an expert and can compile programs and write shell scripts till the penguins come home.

For those that don't want the headache of configuring Xorg and installing a window manager, you can google "Arch Bang".

Win7 sucks...I can't even run chat on it without it shutting down every few minutes.

Currently testing the Mandriva final RC on my main machine, but I'm thinking of taking another run at Arch. Strangely enough, I find it a bit convoluted. Gentoo was my first u-bild, but for a REAL project, LFS (Linux From Scratch) is a blast, especially on older commodity hardware. Give it a whirl!

Thats not the OS. Its a problem most likely with an overheating CPU or a hard drive issue

yes you are right on vista and 7 are better at running duel cores and quad cores xp even with service pack 3 will not optomize the second core

Ever tried Crossover Game? To be fair, I'm not a big gamer, but we never found one that didn't work.
