Just Got A VERY Disturbing Text From My Friend...

I am the OP. I have no way of proving it as I have switched cable providers since starting this thread and thus I have a different IP address. However, rest assured, I am indeed the OP.

I have spoken roughly 4 or 5 times with my friend since he decided to move. He and his wife have put their home on the market and are apparently pricing it for quick sale at a considerable loss (He purchased the home at the end of the boom in 2006).

They are currently renting a small townhouse in Western PA until they can find permanent housing in that area.

He has assured me that we are on the brink of a financial downturn so devastating that it will "change the country" as he put it.

He informed me that his wife's mother is also relocating to eastern Ohio and that his sister-in-law has just now conceded to her mother's wishes and is frantically moving her family out of New York City (the sister-in-law lives on Manhattan).

I have continued to try to glean information from him as to what is coming but he is steadfast in his veiled responses to my questions.

He's basically saying, "Things are going to get really tough this summer, worse in the fall, and terrible in the winter through into 2011 and beyond."

I'm now getting the impression that this is a terrorist scare, but rather a decent amount of foresight into the coming economic downturn or even collapse.

I asked him whether or not I should come up with a contingency plan for my wife and I and he said, "If you're smart, you'll have a backup or emergency plan in place".

(I live in eastern Kentucky btw)

I then asked how sure he was that this downturn would occur and he said, "I'm sure enough that I quit my job and moved my family 400 miles away from New York". He followed that up with, "You DON'T want to be near a big city like NYC when things get bad, and things are pretty much DEFINITELY going to get bad."

This seems to parallel the current events of the last few weeks as more and more chatter is coming out about double dip recessions, depressions, and financial gloom and doom.


He's been very busy with the move, so my conversations with him have been rather limited, but I will try to learn more after he gets settled and has a chance to discuss things more in depth.

Thanks for everyone's patience, I was without internet for a week or so, so that was the reason for the delay in updates.

Back to update if I learn anything more.

Thanks OP. Very interesting - I hope your friend's information is wrong, but a lot of things seem to be coming together and so what you posted seems very possible. The Dow seems to be creeping back down to the 8000 level fairly soon, and here in NY the legislature is having a huge problem trying to pass a budget - lots of service cuts and layoffs etc being proposed by the state govt, and couple that with the already poor world economy, the GOM disaster the outlook doesn't look good. Anyway, please keep posting whatever other info you can get. Thanks.

This was a typo. I'm NOT getting the impression that this is a terrorist motivated move, but rather it is a move based on the thinking that the economy is about to tank.

As for the other question of why he is being so veiled, that I'm not too sure of the reason why.

I'm guessing that he doesn't really care to continue discussing what he believes to be a very bad time in the near future.

He's always been very guarded anyway, so it might just be him and how he is. He has basically admitted that he thinks the next downturn will be something historical.

It sounds spot on. He probably doesn't say much because the whole thing is sickening really. Everybody's heard who wants to hear. Let us know if you hear any more and what your plans are. It sounds like you are in as good a place as you can be.

Why would they move out of NYC because of the economy. Doesn't make sense. They scared the Hassids are going to start robbing Goya or something.

I think most of us agree on this, its not only him there are many people saying the same.
What i would like to know is; what sign should one look for to know for sure its time to move from the city.
