CEO Ford-Mulally graduated from the University of Kansas, also his mother's alma mater,[1] in 1969 with Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in aeronautical and astronautical engineering. He is an alumnus of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and is its 2007 Man of the Year.[9] He received a Master's degree in Management (S.M.) as a Sloan Fellow from the MIT Sloan School of Management[10] in 1982.[11]

CEO Facebook Attended Harvard. Created Facebook as an online directory for Harvard students in his sophomore year; left soon afterward to expand the company.

Bill Gates also attended Harvard.

So what is your point of not attending college? Considering the rigorous curriculum at Harvard, it is not surprising that Zuckerman and Gates withdrew to have adequate time to pursue their business ventures. None of these gentlemen claimed that higher education is a waste of time. In fact all three of them support universities through funding or scholarships.

I work with a girl who is doing the same thing. I know if I try to tell her it is a scam, she will never believe me and would probably never speak to me again. It breaks my heart to see her paying all that money and studying so diligently.

Actually these degrees work just fine for teachers who need masters degrees. My sister has one and it fulfilled her requirement. Says a lot about the quality of educations for the teachers teaching our kids.

It is better to go to a cheaper school for your four year degree and then go to a prestigious school for your Master's on up. That is the degree people will look at these days.

No one really cares where you got your four year from because they are just like high school degrees these days. But a Master's means something. Unless of course you need it to just keep your job as in teaching in elementary through high school or even some colleges(mainly junior ones). Then online one's are fine as long as your place of work accepts it. ALWAYS find out in advance.

I worked admissions at a big University. I was amazed at how the pros in this field could tell you how good almost every high school, college or university was.

I don't know about Phoenix, but on line has yet to prove itself--it will some day though. Although many say that the work is actually harder.

University of Phoenix is a joke as are community colleges. Waste of money and time.

Attend a real university.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1230442

Community colleges are not a waste of time. Get an AA from then and it transfers to a 4 year university. It is much cheaper and easier to do and people will never know since the 4 year university's name will be on your degree. And there are two year degrees that will lead straight into a job. Just know what you are doing before signing up for anything including Ivy League's.

She could get into trouble for making a statement like that. Discrimination is the word. You need to speak directly to her supervisor then call the labor board and file a complaint she was being discriminating towards you because of where you obtained your education.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1352858

Wait, what?
So the company should be forced to hire this person over someone who may have a degree from Yale because it's discrimination?
You sound like someone who got their degree online.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1101793

The woman should not have said anything about his degree. She could have just continued the interview and told him they would get in touch with him at a later date and of course just not called or told him someone more qualified was given the position. No one needs to tell you why or why you didn't get the job. She made a mistake of dissing the place he got his degree.

The interviewer was a snob. The U of Phoenix degree is every bit as good as most state universities. But don't let it get you down. Snobs are snobs, and like someone said, thank heavens you don't have to spend your life with those people at that job.

I always thought college was all mixed up. The only thing you should go to college for is the liberal arts or history of ideas, or whatever topic gains from being discussed and analyzed, researched, taken apart and put back together. Business? No. You learn business by doing it. Talking about it all that time "in theory" is just ridiculous.

Going to school to get a job is just a waste of time. Get a job in the field you want to work in and get started learning. Why spend a few years talking about it first?

I got a liberal arts degree and loved every second of it. I gave not one thought to the job question (although I was working all through school at a job). If I had my way I would spend all my time reading and studying, because I love reading and studying. But it has nothing at all to do with having a job.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15779753

Going to school because one just loves to read and study is too expensive and time consuming. The only reason to go to school these days is to get a career unless of course the person is just filthy rich and doesn't need a career. Then they can take their time to read and study. The rest of us need to get on with it in order to live and bring home a paycheck.

Whenever I see a resume of a Univ. of Phoenix graduate cross my desk, it goes straight into the trash.

Sorry... but you chose the "easy" path. A year to get an MBA??? This tells me you didn't have the patience, dedication, or commitment to get an education.

My advice... shred your U of P MBA and used it in a hamster cage. You'll get more use out of it.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1286423

But those are the ones who you will find in the business world who do the hiring. These days with so many people looking for jobs they can afford to be picky and downright snotty. An applicant needs to shine in order to get a job now. Or else they need to make their own business if they are smart/creative enough.

Whereas you believe that accreditation is the key to validity, the source of the accreditation is the actual key. I could form an accreditation board in my pajamas on my laptop and have the same value as the "University" of Phoenix. You should have known the first week of classes that it was not a legitimate degree. My middle school had tougher classes.

At a real university, you have to attend and participate in classes. You have to read the text before class. You have to study so hard that, if you have a job, you feel like crying each night when you go to bed, because you are so tired. A course of education at an institute of higher education is supposed to transform you into a new person, a scholar.
 Quoting: accreditation 24259719

And at universities you have to really read the professor. In classes that are subjective, like lit classes, speech classes, etc., you have to find out what will get you the A and give them that. It is not about what you think but about what the prof thinks. And that gets you ahead in the business world when you have to read people there and give them what they want. It is a game that must be played very carefully and you will be rewarded for it. Employers will know at a brick and mortar university you had to put up with a lot of BS to get that degree. It is really not like that at an online univ. It is not fair but that is how it is.

Banks would laugh at a degree from your best state university. They want an Ivy League college or Stanford. An online MBA can help if you're an engineer and want to expand your skills but it won't help much in the financial field.

The University of Phoenix has the same regional accredidation as most U.S. Universities, that's why it qualiifed for federal student aid and veteran's benefits. The MBA does not have AACSB accredidation, but only fewer than one third of US business schools ahve AACSB accredidation. I'd say one year is a very short period of time to earn an MBA, two years is the standard. The best schools for distance programs in business are those that also have a traditional campus, such as Boston University or New York University.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 921624

Unfortunately Accreditation is based upon standard set for by the group of schools themselves.
Most often it requires the schools to have a certain acreage campus, so many enrolled students or graduates, a certain sized library, etc.
This prevents newer schools from joining the "club". This allows them to be snobs and have a prestigious name.

Its all about Money and Power, not educational standards, especially in the "Ivy league" schools.

They interview people for jobs, that they have no clue as to what is needed to be successful in that position!
Try to talk to a real businessman or manager. They understand the real business world. If you can impress them, then sometimes you can bypass the idiot HR people.

I am completing a degree through nc state but online (called DE for distance ed). I hate my school bc it is so big and impersonal and the admins are worthless if you have admin questions. Being DE is even harder bc they don't even return calls. But it was cheaper and more legit than Pheonix and other online only schools. College is an f-ing racket!

The thing with higher education is that you can teach a monkey to do tricks, but you can't teach the monkey to be smarter than it already is. It's still a monkey. Higher education is the teaching of tricks to the monkeys. It does not make you smarter.

The University of Phoenix may not be the most highly regarded, but the woman definitly has a disoriented rectum. MBA's usually take six years. If you had already completed your bachelors elsewhere then it should fly because it would really be a five year education, which is plausible in the real world.
