$100 bucks a year for mine maintenance. Off the radar, because most don't give a shit when its in bump fuck. This is my plan B if I can't get out in time. Make sure that it is cut into SOLID rock, little shoring, and a significant distance down. It would also behoove you to line key livable compartments with sheets of plumbers lead lining... a galena mine would substitute for this. A CME is coming, but that ain't half of what goes down... remember, it MUST be within an hours drive of your current location, not easily accessible. You will have a small window of opportunity when the shit hits to get out of a city environment...

OP, I'm curious what you have done regarding underground shelter. I've been looking at Utah systems....

Did anyone see the underground shelter in the movie 'The Road' (rented RedBox) I want one like that!! funny the lights/batteries only lasted a few minutes, but the guy who built it had many candles, and some brands of dry food that I own.

Just had to get that off my chest. Oh, and why would you want your secret hideout directly below your public living quarters anyway?!! Thats all. I swear most of you really wont make it.

You are correct in spirit .
But a unfinished basement is a 10th foot deep hole that you can do anything you want to do to with it.
Honestly I don't really understand the point of your post.
Not everyone has a mine nearby or a cave to hide in.
I'd even go as far as to say that building a shelter under your home is probably the best thing you can do.

All the preps you make "down the road" ain't gonna mean shit when that flash of light hits.

I love how ppl always think they are going to have "time" to get to shelter.

Well, I couldnt type enough. I love the setup of the utah systems. They cover all the angles but with a 50g price tag. Im in the process of building something similar(digging)in the North ga mountains. Im in the market for a old SCHOOL bus shell because they have increased rigidity to bury with the schematics of your utah. A better option would be steel cargo containers which you can get pretty cheap. To be done properly these things need much preparation as opposed to your utah which comes ready to drop in the ground. Because the worst thing would be if something did happen and you went through all this prep and you would of survived but your whole thing collapses cause you missed a stich somewhere. But if your still paying on the land like me you have to survive on a budget. ha ha. Just please make sure you make your entrance, breathing vents etc. away from your actual site.
