New Oil leak found 75 miles northwest of the BP webcam leak!!!!
This should be pinned for discussion.

New Oil leak found 75 miles northwest of the BP webcam leak.

is a leak at the rate of 120,000 barrels a day or 5,040,000 gallons a day!!!

James H. Cowan Jr., a professor at Louisiana State University, said his crew on Wednesday found a plume of oil in a section of the gulf 75 miles northwest of the source of the leak.

Cowan said that his crew sent a remotely controlled submarine into the water, and found it full of oily globules, from the size of a thumbnail to the size of a golf ball. Unlike the plume found east of the leak — in which the oil was so dissolved that contaminated water appeared clear — Cowan said the oil at this site was so thick that it covered the lights on the submarine.

“It almost looks like big wet snowflakes, but they’re brown and black and oily,” Cowan said. The submarine returned to the surface entirely black, he said.

Cowan said that the submarine traveled about 400 feet down, close to the sea floor, and found oil all the way down. Trying to find the edges of the plume, he said the submarine traveled miles from side to side.

“We really never found either end of it,” he said.

This discovery seems to confirm the fears of some scientists that — because of the depth of the leak and the heavy use of chemical “dispersants” — this spill was behaving differently than others. Instead of floating on top of the water, it may be moving beneath it.

Simmons went on the say scientist are now convinced the last majority of oil is below, and often well below, the surface. June 1 starts hurricane season and they worry that a hurricane coming aground in the Louisiana / Mississippi area could “push” all the below surface oil on the beaches and even inland.

OK so HOW did this NEW leak get started. I say BULLSHIT!!!

IMO it is a plume that has travelled under the surface and is settling in a low current area of the gulf.

Unless the whole area has become unstable because of the initial shock of the leak this would be nigh on impossible as a natural occurance.

I don't know how it got started.
It just may be a giant oil blob that came from the well.
They could not find the edge.

But it is 75 miles away from the well in an area that looks clear on the surface.

The title of the article/thread is misleading.

This is a new plume, not a new leak. I.E the oil from the current leaks is traveling underwater in giant plumes, and a new tentacle of the plume mass is heading where ever they discovered it

The article did say this:

Last Sunday, NOAA confirmed reports of a second fissure about 5-7 miles from the original. This new fissure appears to be releasing a plume the size of Delaware and Maryland combined!

So maybe NOAA has some maps ... Hmmm
NOAA built the arc and the world got flooded.

figured it out

looks like the Marco Polo line cuts right through Mississippi Canyon Block 252

and some miles to the right there is another line

75 NW of the leak would be a BUNCH of pipelines

crap

i think the pipeline is leaking

hope i am wrong

dammit

5-6 miles away to the right of the Marco Polo line is the Allegheny line

isn't there supposed to be a even bigger leak 5-6 miles away?

and 75 NW is where the Poseidon Line, the Allegheny Line and a bunch of other lines meet up

OH, JUST GREAT!

Did you collect your check from BP yet?

Nice try but BP is to blame for all the oil in the Gulf of Mexico.

Here you go - your looking for
Mississippi Canyon 252 Block

The MMS map of Active Leases and Infrastructure in the Gulf of Mexico as of Feb. 10, 2010:

.PDF file at Link below:
[link to www.gomr.mms.gov]
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It takes a while to enlarge the .PDF file -
and you can see it - and the Pipeline layouts.

from what I read, BP drilled a well, they drilled too fast ... made cracks ... they plugged that well and moved away then drilled another well (the one that is leaking now)

so perhaps the 1st well is leaking

I don't know the correct terminology, but here is a video:

Re: New Oil leak found 75 miles northwest of the BP webcam leak!!!!
if the casing under the well isnt holding the oil/gas leaks into the adjacent formation which can cover a lot of area, if that formation is a depleted sand, the oil/gas will flow into it, its probably a sand saltwater formation that comes close to or breaches the surface in other places and may have a good caprock like shale covering it in most places, this would cause leaks to pop up away from the well, this isnt a pipeline leak or a "ruptured fault" whatever that is

Re: New Oil leak found 75 miles northwest of the BP webcam leak!!!!
if you want block locations you can download a map of GOM lease blocks from MMS from the web, I'm too lazy to look up the link but its there as I have it in pdf form on my desktop

btw any cracks from drilling are tiny and cant cause this, by drilling too fast they can however connect a charged sand with a depleted sand that is seperated by a caprock and cause flow between the formations, along with other issues but thats not what is going on either

for reference:a charged sand is a sand formation with high pressure and a depleted sand is a low pressure formation. see "abnormal pressure theory" for a deeper explanation of why we use casing programs to combat this, hydrocarbons are normally found in sand formations and there must be a caprock holding the hydrocarbons in the formation, like sand covered with salt or shale for most wells, imagine a jar of marbles, the hydrocarbons are found in the spaces between the marbles, these formations cover large areas and are pushed up in some areas and sunk in other areas, folded and sometimes even turned upside down, a reservoir is a formation that holds the hydrocarbons, its not a cavern, blowouts can happen underground just like they can happen at the wellhead btw, when this happens results like the article mentions often happen if the underground blowout was fairly shallow
