Someone asked whether the deepwater plumes form because of dispersant use at the wellhead or whether this material is settling down from surface waters into the deepwater, again because of dispersant. Considering the plume trajectories, they appear to derive from the wellhead. We do not believe they form from the sinking of oil that was once on the surface. However, that does not mean the plumes are generated because of dispersant use. Quite the contrary, plumes like these most likely form through natural processes. At the temperature and pressure of the reservoir, methane is dissolved in the oil. When the fluid is expelled at the seafloor, the methane comes out of solution in a fairly violent manner. This gas expulsion likely fractionates the oil and it is this fractionation that generates the diffuse oil in the plumes. This process is described in the NRC (2003) report that is given on the resources page of the blog. Please let me know if you’d like a more detailed description of this.

THUNDER HORSE is the main oil deposit it's BP's BIGGIE.

Now if TH was leaking BP might need some
diversion to attract people's attention away from
it while they worked to attempt to fix the problem.

My guess is BP may have blown Macondo for that purpose.
And they would have known in advance that it was
impossible to pipe the oil up from 5000 feet down....
never been done before ( according to the experts)
so they may have 'rigged' it to blow


Most of the oil spill out there in the Gulf is likely
from Thunder Horse not Macondo.

Yep, thats a possibility. Is there anyway to find out if oil is coming out of the thunderhorse area. And when did BP drill there. I"m guessing just before the macondo drilling.

Hmmm... CNN has a story on this actor, Waterston, who is aparently an expert on the environment and oil because he grew up in New England and serves on "the board of an international ocean conservation organization."

He says he has always opposed offshore drilling... and this oil spill should be a huge wake-up call.

He went on to say the US largest research vessel the "Thomas Jefferson" is doing research on the plumes and should have a definative answer by the end of the week.
