That thing is designed for swaying and moving, don't forget that a rig floating on the surface on the water is never a steady point in space, it moves up and down, left en right with the motion of the waves.

What do you think will happen when its NOT flexible?

Also the pipe running from the rigs to the well, has currents pulling and pushing on it all the time.

If its not made flexible it would break off.
