I was wondering a bit about fire under water but that Discovery video quelched that hope.

This is an oil well, not a volcano. If there was molten rock coming up it would melt all of this equipment anyway.

It's fucking freezing down there, there's no fire, there's no magma, there's just a shit ton of oil and methane under 5,000 feet of water, and a fuzzy video-of-a-video doesn't change that.

Ever discharged a can of pressurized gas before? It gets frosty cold. The same thing is happening to methane here. Thus the methane hydrate problem.

You are not missing anything in the equation, Cutting the riser supplied the heat, oil is not what is burning, they are (small) methane hydrate bubbles igniting.

It can and does happen under water, I won't explain it again, nor do I care to. This is why things accomplished in this order, safest first.

Now we are seeing what they were already painfully aware of. A shame for sure!

By the way, relief wells are extremely unlikely to fix this either due to the nature of what they tapped into. Have a great day.
