Depends on the load in your car and indeed the make. 35 psi should be fine.

Don't trust the printing on the tire.

Open your car door.

There is a sticker on the driver's side door.

Look for it.

It lists the proper PSI for your car's tires.

I always go 2-3 lbs less than the rating on the tire.

use common sense.. how does the car handle at the given tire pressure? How do the tires visibly look at that PSI.

30-35 is usually the norm in car tires.

a firm tire will increase fuel milage and extend tire life

but you will feel a harder ride

if your tire says 44 lbs you should run it at 44

on a tire that says 32 lbs i generally keep it at 35 lbs

what size tire do you have and what type of vehicle?

Um. No. IF the tires are no designed to hold 55 psi I wouldn't put that kind of pressure in them. The tires are a better source for this than anything in the car. Tires can change. The stickers don't.

 Quoting: Question 997684

Fill them to 35PSI then drive at least 20 miles, to get them to the highest operating pressure, measure the pressure again. If with the expansion caused by heat, your tires pressure does not exceed 44psi then you have the correct pressure in your tires.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 757124

Actually the temperature range. At low temperature the internal pressure goes down and at high temperature it goes up. The pressure in the tire is set when it is filled relative to the ambient temperature. So if it is very cold when it is filled to 35psi, then the outside temperature goes up very high, the pressure will increase. So the difference between the filling temperature and measuring temperature needs to be taken into account when reading the max pressure in the tire.

Re: If the tires on your car say 44 psi max, what should you fill them to? 44 psi? or 35 psi?
almost all regular road tires will say 35psi

thats fine, but you will get faster tire wear and less mpg

you can pick up 1-3 mpg by running slightly more pressure. I usually run 42psi front, 40psi rear

done this for years, tires last forever. Anything over 42psi is a bit bumpy

i used to have low profile yokohama's that needed 55psi

You should NEVER put air in your tires! If too many people put air in their tires, then how would we breathe?! Don't take away our air please!

Be sure to check the muffler bearings too. This will also decrease your gas mileage.

Try not to expose them to direct sunlight and to much water. There should be a speed rateing letter somewhere on them that is more of a self-destruct rateing and it's do to heat. Thank nas-car.

Ok. So following the logic of the majority of you, if the tire says max psi 40, and the sticker says inflate to 44 (hypothetically speaking), you're going to go inflate to 44.

clappa

Well done!

How about check both and use best judgement?
