Tapping is little more than a gimmick to make up for a lack of speed. Stanley Jordan is good, but his style is nothing special.

The speed freak shows absolutely no emotion in his playing. He stands there like a robotic machine.

As for the longhair...

Percussive string playing is okay and he shows a lot of skill at it. But the song is better suited to a piano. What he does is unique but not earth shattering in guitar talent.

Or Ty Tabor.

First off he's good but there is no such thing as 'better'. Once a musician is great, they are great, but different. Its like saying Carmon Electra is finer than Lissa Mari Scott. They are both nasty hot, just different.

Now back to guitar players, Eddie VH is one of the only guitar players every that could shred on a number one hit and get away with it. I think the only other guy to shred on a number one hit was Randy Rhodes. So there is some unique greatness.

To judge guitar players you need to know what your judging. Its like judging athletes. They all possess different skills.

Guitar players need to be judged by:

Uniqueness
Song Writing Abilities
Technique
Lead capability
The ability to sing while you play
Showmanship
Tone variation
etc.

Think about it, it will open more doors for you.

No one guitarist is the best as there is too many factors to consider as AC...861 pointed out. But I love the innovators personally. The guitarists who are just so original and obviously ahead of their time, Hendrix, VH , Morello to name a few. Then your old masters, Paco de lucia, Gilmour, Lifeson and SRV. List goes on and on. Steve stevens, Malmsteen, Vai, Schenker, Jake e lee. Played guitar for 25 years now(I am 37 btw)and i am STILL none the wiser to who is the true Numero uno. Love them all for inspiring me and thats what its all about.

Tommy has been one of my favorites for years. I keep missing him when he is touring. If I'm in Europe, he's in the States and vice versa. Just frustrating.

Michael Hedges is also a great one. It is unfortunate that his life was cut so short before his talent could blossom full. He was killed by a drunk driver. What a loss :(

Just saw T.E. tonight. Amazing entertainer. Can dazzle with skills one moment, then play with heartfelt emotion the next. Greatest ever? He's clearly up there. There really is no "official" greatest. Everyone has thier own "greatest" in thier mind.

So many guitar styles from picking to tapping to percussion using classical guitars, amps, effects, etc, etc.Tommy would be the first to say there is no point comparing guitarists. I want to hear my Peter Green, Larry Carlton, Pete Haycock, Eddie Van Halen, Jeff Beck & so on. They all have unique styles & none of them can do what the others do...for the reasons that we love the particular guitarist. Sure someone might be able to copy Beck to a certain extent but it won't be the same.

It is silly to suggest that somehow one style eg shredding is better than say Vladimir Mikulka doing a Bach guitar piece. They are not comparable. Enjoy them all.

Yesterday went to Tommy Emmanuel concert in St Petersburg with my son and was shocked by a manner he is using the sacred instrument. Best?
I do not think so. All I know for sure you can not use a guitar as a drum. A few guitarists touched me with their music: Mark Knophler, John Petrucci, Jimmy Page, ... I felt my soul touched by theirs. I can not say that about Tommy. I can say he is a talent but the feeling that I am watching some sort of tricks show never left me.

yes Tommy Emmanuel is in fact the best ever. He can play as technically fast as any of the guitarists in the above clips; what they do on a electric guitar he can do on a acoustic. But more then that his music is beautiful and his knowledge of music is probably more then everyone above combined. Many guitarists can shred AS well as tommy and are as technically skilled but their music is for the most part garbage.

why is it bestguitarist-tards are always fans of power chords and amplification? or "shredding"....wtf

3. I also did not notice him doing anything special with his right hand.......just strumming the strings with exactly the same force.....not much touch. Course maybe things are different with other songs.

Is this Tommy guy good? Yeah I guess, but I'm not overly impressed. I've seen run of the mill bluegrass players blow this guy away. I would much rather enjoy someone like Michael Hedges. Not only was he amazing he was truly innovative and one of the sweetest souls I have ever met.
