There wasnt a decent thread on here about this so here goes.
If your on this site I dont need to explain all the reasons we might need an underground shelter/bunker but heres a few. Planet X effects, climate/earth changes, drough/famine, earthquakes, asteroids, disease, war and any effects that may be coming our way. Im going to try not to get into what to have there and just the principle.
The main things to consider at first are your BUDGET and your LOCATION. And ofcourse, constructing to your county code. ;)

These are some general points to the concept:
•As deep underground as possible to protect from radiation, flying projectiles and debris. The mammals from cicxulub survived under just a couple feet of soil but I would prefer atleast 10ft. Consider you psi according to depth and your structure.
•Outside of areas known to be flood prone, including areas within the 100 year flood plain. Really consider your geographical location.
•The bunker should be placed so that people have a short route to the entrance/exit.
•Away from any potential debris field and its emergency exits and air inlets can be extended on several sides of the building into zones that are free from debris and fire.
•The bunker should have as much of its external walls against the ground as possible for protection from heat and for support provided by the surrounding soil.
•Away from flammable materials, vehicles and hazardous materials. Anything that would indicate you have been there.
•Away from large objects and multi-story buildings, light poles, antennas, satellite dishes or roof mounted mechanical equipment.
•The bunker should be made easily concealed. A hidden entrance with a incline/decline tunnel to the actual shelter so they couldnt flood or smoke you out.

These are basically indestructable boxes you put in room and just hide it out. I wouldnt suggest this for anything but a all natural disaster. [link to www.safeguardshelters.com]

Here is a list of potential underground bunkers. Some will need more preperation then others to be fit. Sandblasting, welding, reinforcement, etc. Additional weatherproof lining like truck bed liner.

* Empty missle silo- 3' thick epoxy resin formulated concrete reinforced with stainless steel mesh. It would be a DEEP invesment.
* Steel cargo containers-(You can find one used for about 1000 dollars if you look. These can withstand pressure from all sides are probably your best bet. People are renovating these to "go green" and use as living quarters across the world. Link- [link to www.google.com]
* Empty school bus shell- Cheap but not as dependable. Make sure you get a city ordinance bus that has increased rigidity. If you pinched you could have one of these finished for about 2,000 dollars. If for some reason you havent heard of the Ark Two Community in Canada. It has a 10,000 sq/ft nuclear shelter as part of its refuge facility. This may be the largest Privately Constructed nuclear fallout shelter in the world. 42 buses were used as forms to pour a minimum of 12 inches of high strength concrete that was heavily reinforced with rebar. A minimum of 5 feet to a maximum of 14 feet of earth was pushed back overtop. On the other hand. I have heard of a guy doing this and it collapsed the minute he finished.
* Empty liquid tankers- Cheap. Has built in ladder. Not to hard to connect them.
