Katla volcano newest earthquake swarm
Posted on November 16, 2011 by Jón Frímann

During the night of the 16th of November, 2011 there was a new earthquake swarm in Katla volcano. This earthquake swarm is a part of ongoing pattern in Katla volcano. This pattern started after the small eruption that took place in Katla in July 2011. It was observed yesterday that there was a deep earthquake in Katla volcano, with the depth of 28 km. This earthquake did most likely did happen due to a dike intrusion deep inside Katla volcano, but it might well be that this was just a normal earthquake.....

The quakes on this ridge usually precede activity at Iceland's volcanoes.

Very calm the last few days.
It is easy to start thinking that nothing is happening here but the reality is that there was hardly, if any activity at all within the Katla Caldera 2 years ago.

The albeit infrequent activity we are still seeing shows that there is definitly something still going on.

I hope it holds off until at least February next year.

Bogus news story going around about Katla volcano
November 25, 2011 by Jón Frímann

There is a bogus news story about Katla volcano. The bogus news are that Katla volcano is just few days from erupting. This is wrong. At the moment there are no signs that Katla volcano is about to erupt. There is currently a relative quiet in Katla volcano, compared to the activity several weeks ago. But that activity started after the minor eruption in Katla volcano in July 2011 (this summer).....

Katla: Icelandic Volcano Could Cause Catastrophic Flooding, According To BBC Report

A powerful volcanic eruption could be about to rock Iceland, according to a BBC report.

Were it to erupt, Katla, which boasts a 6.2-mile crater, could cause catastrophic flooding by melting “billions of gallons” of frozen glacier water, sending it surging to the Atlantic Ocean...

So...Um...is the story true that it may erupt, or is it true that it is a false story floating around the net? I was reading through another thread on this subject but it degraded down to a pissing contest between a few gentlemen. Funny as hell, but still not clear which story is true. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

Nobody knows how the volcano will behave. It is believed that there was a small eruption under the ice cover earlier this year which may have deflated some of the pressure. Right now it is relatively quiet with just minor tremors and nothing being reported on it in the Icelandic media an no indications of anything big being imminent. So there is no justification for any excitement about Katla at the moment. Hope this helps.

Re: Hello KATLA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seimic unrest continues to build at Iceland’s Katla volcano

A huge Icelandic volcano long overdue an eruption is showing signs of activity – threatening disruption to air traffic, experts have said. There have been more than 500 tremors at Katla in the south of the country in just the last month. An increase in activity at the site since July has also been causing volcanologists concern, when increasing temperatures and seismic activity caused a flood, washing away a road bridge....

Unravelling a Volcano Using Crystals Under a Microscope
December 2, 2011

Normally at this time of the week, I look at volcanoes from far away – usually not even from the planet. However, this week, I’m going to go in the opposite direction* (so, if you want to skip ahead to the active volcanoes, go ahead). I’ll be looking at a volcano from up close, so up close that you need a microscope to see these details. This isn’t a normal microscope, but a petrographic microscope that utilizes the special optical properties of minerals cut thin, down to ~30 microns thick (we call them “thin sections“). Light will pass through many minerals at that thickness but the crystalline lattice of the mineral will refract, or bend, the light. The trick is you need polarized light that is vibrating in a single direction. So, if you stick a mineral in a light beam that passes through one polarizer before the mineral and one polarizer after the minerals, the refraction, specific to each mineral, will cause the minerals to have a variety of colors and other optical properties....

Growing earthquake swarm in Krísuvík volcano
December 3, 2011 by Jón Frímann

There seems to be a growing earthquake swarm in Krísuvík volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula. The strongest earthquake so far is a ML2.2 according to the automatic size estimate. Some ghost earthquakes appear to be outside a town called Akranes and Reykjavík to the north. But that are earthquakes that are in fact nothing but errors. This earthquake swarm is tectonic in nature, not volcanic. So there is not going to be a eruption in Krísuvík volcano from what I can tell at current moment...
