Anonymous Coward User ID: 1297814 Germany 12/04/2011 11:47 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | hi yep, sure i have an eye on it New media hype over Katla volcano December 4, 2011 by Jón Frímann There apparently is a new media hype over Katla volcano in the British press. This time around it is from BBC News. The news in question claims that a eruption in Katla volcano is going to have a global impact. This is nothing but a exaggeration in my view. While a eruption in Katla volcano might be big, there effects are mostly localized to Iceland. This was clear during the Grímsfjall volcano eruption in May of 2011. Where the global effect was close to zero, there where some flight disruptions. But they where not something major like did happen during Eyjafjalljökull volcano eruption.... [link to www.icenews.is] [link to www.heraldsun.com.au] [link to www.news.com.au] Seems the BBC who are supposed to be totally impartial and usually are, have recently started reporting and adding in thier own speculation. I am hoping that this gets taken to task and stamped on. Everything in the UK has got very apolitical over the last few months and as seen previously when Thatcher got into power, the opposition are trying to effect/sabotage from within. Unions, scare politics etc... From the BBC website, there is no mention of Katla with the Congo eruption the most recent volcano news item dated Nov 18th. I agree when you say that a Katla eruption is likely to be localised. It normally is. There is the potential for it to be so much worse with global effects and ash fall across most of Northern Europe. This is a worst case scenario though. Last Edited by Dog^ on 12/05/2011 05:26 AM |

[link to strokkur.raunvis.hi.is] I think this is another volcano that no one is giving attention and might be having an eruption in near future. It already had an uncofirmed subglacial eruption this year in July. Hamarinn belongs to Bardarbunga fissure system, which has shown to be capable of producing some of the largest eruptions of lava and ash in Iceland. Reply Irpsit says: December 19, 2011 at 12:41 Compare the inflation with Katla. [link to strokkur.raunvis.hi.is] The long-term inflation of Hamarinn is considerable larger to that of Katla, and I think it is more or less comparable with the amount of inflation Grimsvotn had this year prior to its May eruption (but one cannot compare both, because one is long-term, the other was short-term). There are volcanoes in Iceland that are not so active and have remain dormant for thousands of years now and currently do not show any signs of activity. Some have some hot spring activity. But that is about it for them. The following volcanoes in Iceland have not erupted in historical times. Some have not even erupted in past 12.000 years best to my knowledge.... Rly cool post from Jon... Volcano Hrómundartindur – Last eruption is unknown. This volcano is an stratovolcano. Grensdalur – Last eruption was in Pleistocene and its current status is Pleistocene-Fumarolic. This volcano is an stratovolcano. Grímsnes – Last eruption is believed to have taken place around 3500 BC. But this volcano is marked as tephrochronology. This volcano makes crater rows when it erupts. Geysir – This volcano last erupted in Pleistocene and is marked as Pleistocene-Geysers. This is an stratovolcano. ReadMore: [link to www.jonfr.com] |

Irpsit says: December 21, 2011 at 14:24 Interesting those earthquakes in Vatnajokull. First some deep quakes in Kverfjoll, then a major 3.3 earthquake on northeast side of Bardarbunga caldera (Kistufell), which was now revised to be deeper than though (around 8km). This is followed now by medium size earthquakes in Hamarinn, but less deep (around 4km). Looks to me, there has been a lateral dike intrusion along Bardarbunga towards the southwest (Hamarinn). A fissure quite restless this year, and showing considerable inflation. [link to www.jonfr.com] |

The largest earthquake in this earthquake swarm was ML3.04 in magnitude. It had the depth of 8.5 km. This might have been a n dike intrusion. But it is hard to know that for sure at the moment. This earthquake swarm only lasted for an about 2 to 3 hours before it stopped. [link to www.jonfr.com] |
