Learned some new stuff tonight.

I can tell you first hand what happens when up are exposed to Benzene.
My father has a machine shop which I grew up playing in.
Lot's of chemicals like coolant (benzene)
Fat forward 30 years, I've had 2 colon surgeries, crohns disease and RA. They also found white blood cells in my spinal fluid .... I don't even want to deal with that.

I have been sick my entire life in and out of hospitals finally placed on SSD.
For the past ten years I changed my lifestyle and diet and now control my illnesses that way. I haven't had any more surgeries but I am sick all the time.
I can't even go down the chemical aisle without throwing up.

I am 46 I wonder if I will live to be 60.

Please avoid the Gulf. If you are smelling the chemicals its too late you have been exposed.

I left the Gulf last week because I couldn't take a chance with my health.

I hope the folks are really paying attention more

Nashville is 550 - 1,100' above sea level (really? That much difference?) and quite far inland. The benzene and other heavy gas would most likely have their greatest damaging effects under 200' elevations, especially right on the coast.
I'm over 1,100' elevation and on top of a hill, but would have to drive through some valleys to get to any towns. However, even those valleys are over 1,100 elevation.

Nice try, but BP and the government should never receive a “get out jail free” card on any of this. BP’s arrogance and greed coupled with the government’s incompetence and ignorance have caused horrific and unnecessary suffering for the creatures of the gulf and the humans that live there. The blame and responsiblity lies with the companines involved and the governments, not with the masses, who really have little choice or control of the whole situation either in the US, or in Africa, which is also a horrible situation.

Also, as if it wasnt already bad enough, BP further compounds the problem and makes it worse by its use of the dispersant Corexit, further jeopardizing the Gulf, it's people and ecosystems. The only logical reason for the use of these dispersants was to camouflage the extent of the mess for as long as possible, another act of cowardly arrogance on the part of BP.

These may be due to crude oil alone, or in combination with dispersants. Hydrogen sulfide has an initial odor, but also has a unique capacity to cause acclimation to the smell. That is, people become accustomed to it quickly and will not recognize they are in an area with high levels of hydrogen sulfide. That has caused substantial illness and even death in some cases.”

“ In past disasters, inadequate public information and protections have caused serious health problems among responders and local communities that were poorly informed about hazards. Long after 9/11, cleanup workers remained uninformed and unprotected as they were exposed to carcinogens, neurotoxins, and other hazards. Negligent actions of many agencies led to thousands of severely harmed workers who are disabled and often dying. This occurred without any good reason. Adequate information and protective equipment could have protected those who worked after the initial attack.

The human toll of the Gulf oil spill will rise far above the eleven men who were initially killed when the oil rig exploded unless the current federal pattern of secrecy and inadequate protections changes. There is no excuse for failing to inform and protect workers and the public, at a minimum offering them accurate information and recommending options for protection.

Federal, state, and local agencies' desire to keep this information secret is unjustified and dangerous. There is no place for politics or selfish personal interests when people are exposed to chemicals that can cause disease and death. Current actions reflect the opposite of protective public health strategies. Those who place the public interest and well being above corporate and agency interests must be allowed to take appropriate actions in this situation to insure the best possible current and future health for people in the Gulf Region.”

The people who really caused this disaster may never get their full measure of reward for what they have done to this earth, and I’m hoping that a higher power will see to it that they are held accountable for their sins, but I am sure not ready to “forgive or forget”.


They deserve prosecution to the fullest extent of the law, and they also need to make the fullest possible compensation and restoration both financially (which seems to be the only thing that they really understand) and morally to the Gulf of Mexico and its people.



I would love to see the BP executives down on the Gulf, physically cleaning up this mess, but that will never happen, as they realize how toxic and dangerous their monstrous creation is. Instead they hire Gulf residents to do their dirty work and keep their dirty secrets.

If memory serves I do believe hydrogen sulfide was a major contributor to a massive extinction event on earth over 200 million years ago. Some experts think an asteroid impact may have caused the start to this massive extinction then the gases killed off most everything.

Because they had already spent too much money drilling for green paint and diesel the week before.

OP - do you think that the East Coast of Florida is in danger? Isn't that too far away for the airborne contaminants to pool? We live 6 blocks from the ocean - there is always a breeze. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
