Remarkably good idea, and carried out with good manners and kindness.

While it is kind of unusual to go calling strangers to ask about their wellbeing, this is an extremely irregular circumstance, and it makes sense to call them.

Telling them that they are in our prayers is a wonderful thing to do. Lets them know that they are not isolated, and that American and other people around the world care about them.

Just a thought -- What about calling up VETERINARIANS in coastal areas.

They would be kind of "off the radar" so far as official scrutiny -- BUT we know that people will be taking their pets in with the same kind of health problems people may be suffering.

I think this is such a great idea. Just call the people and find out what is going on down there. It would be good to tell them about this forum too, and that we are all concerned about them. Maybe it will help wake up the ones that aren't yet.

We need to find ways of communicating with the people most affected by this spill. I am very concerned about the evacuation aspect of this. Concerned about where people will be taken.

I found this forum about 4 days ago and I responded to a post that night regarding the military presence in grand isle. I along with others were dismissed that night because we were not "regulars".

I live right outside of New Orleans and this is a huge deal, but the truth is 99% of us are going about our business as usual. People are going to the movies, to shows, to dinner (yep even seafood) to work, the kids are at the ballparks, our local minor league baseball team is playing, our Saints are practicing and were even down in the plaquemines area.

After reading this forum for the last few days I've come to the conclusion that "some" of you don't really want to hear the truth you are so caught up in doom and disaster that it has to be so.

Some of the things posted have made me extremely nervous, but I can't do anything about them. If the world is ending I can only live every day to the fullest - and guess what thats what we are doing down here in Louisiana and I got a feeling thats what they are doing in mississippi, alabama and the florida panhandle, as well. We are concerned and we know that our leaders have failed us, but if we sit in our homes petrified to go out - life passes us by.

I have no doubt that the OP called folks in grand isle and that he/she was met with pleasantries - most people are generally nice.

one last thought the videos showing the empty camps in grand isle is not concerning because those are rentals and if there is no fishing or beach activities - no reason to go spend 100+ a day to rend the camps.

I really don't think these two ladies worked for BP. One was older and the other had been watching the videos on Facebook about the Sheriff not getting answers from BP. They were very nice.

Very commendable that you thought of actually just calling folks and talking to them and wishing them the best. That's great - imagine if everyone just started talking to each other and supporting each other.

I do have to wonder however how it is that BP can close beaches to living beings however. Are they now another 'governing' branch of the same corporations that presume some sort of divine authority over all the living beings on the planet, or did Jesus himself come and appoint BP to be a special governing authority?

All this doom and gloom is good for one thing. To help the living beings realize that a choice is to be made.

Are we going to be governed by the Living Law of Love or are the corporations and their numerous psychopaths doing a fine job running everything for us all?

Eventually everyone will realize the truth of what is really happening. The sooner we all wake up the better it will all be.

On a side note - spoke with a native Outer Banks friend the other day and asked what the word was down there about the very real possibility that the oil could hit their shores...the answer (in a beautiful, thoughtfully articulated southern drawl) was: "You know what? We live one day at a time down here and don't worry about such things. We have hurricane warnings all the time and you can't spend life worrying about 'em, or else you miss the other more important things."

I agree that it was cool that you just went through phonebooks and started calling people. Well, kind of creepy too, but cool at the same time. This reeks of something Americans would do in the 1950's, when we still had civility :)

I live (always have) near the TX coast. My family was raised and grew-up on the beach near two different ports...

I feel bad for our neighbors and a little guilty that we don't share the burde...

BUT...

If WE did.... I mean, if Texas had that goopy brown shit on our beaches, bays or marshes...

I think that they would have to call the national guard from keeping us from going to all out war with those MF's!!!!

actually no I have not. Others told me a few days after the spill that they did, but I was in the same area and didn't smell it. I find it really hot and humid here which makes the air thick. I know people are worried and concerned, but there is no odors in the air that are not normal.

An elderly gentleman shared an experience with me about swimming at grand isle as a child. He said that he returned to the shore full of oil. His parents scrubbed him down with alcohol and he has lived 65+ years to share it. He was minimally concerned - he was also a professional md so I found that conversation interesting.

As far as BP shutting down the island - they didn't. It is my understanding that the La govt is the one making the decisions about the oyster beds and areas in which to fish.

WHat I would love to see our local govt tell the federal govt to shove it. We have ideas and we are implementing them.

Thank you for answering my question. It's nice to have a first hand view of it. There are so many rumors, you don't know what to believe.
