They don´t(or didn´t) want a general strike for two reasons.

The first one is the state of the economy here. The unemployment is at more than 20%, and some kind of cuts are neccesary and a general strike will damage the country more, and is not going to benefit in any way.

The second one is that the party on the government is a Left Party(Social-democracy) and the union workers prefer this govern instead of a conservative one, but they are saying now that the reform has gone too far.

So the DO want a strike now? According to one article (The Daily Fail - so you never know) Spain is on the verge of bankruptcy:

[link to www.dailymail.co.uk]

I know Spain's banks have had a lot of trouble but they keep it quiet over here. I think in the short run TPTB want the Euro to rally again for a bit - funny how last week Hungary and the Societe Generale were both facing imminent crises and now it's forgotten.

Re: Breaking News: GENERAL STRIKE TO HIT SPAIN
The government has said it will approve the reforms in a Cabinet meeting Wednesday so Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero — under intense pressure over Spain's debt and deficit loads — can take it with him to an EU summit in Brussels the next day.

The Socialists lack a majority in Parliament and will need to win votes from the opposition, or at least some abstentions, to have a bill pass. The government says the proposal — a decree that cannot be amended — will be voted June 22.

The government has fashioned its own labor market reform proposals after long-running talks between unions and Spain's main business federation collapsed last week. Not all of the details have been released, but Corbacho has said the government is considering making it easier and cheaper for money-losing companies to lay people off.

Fernando Lezcano, a spokesman for one of Spain's main labor unions, Workers Commissions, said Monday that a general strike will be called to protest the proposed reforms. The date of the strike will be announced after a meeting Tuesday, he said at a news conference.

Re: Breaking News: GENERAL STRIKE TO HIT SPAIN
I'm British but been living in Spain for over 6 years and one of the main problems is that a lot of the locals, where I live, just don't seem to see that there is a problem!

Many ex-pats have already just walked away from their homes and the savings banks now have an abundance of property on their books that they can't sell. All around me there are empty houses and businesses. Even the beaches are empty, for the time of year.

Locals just expect that the tourists from Madrid will arrive when their kids finish school next week and then the British tourists will arrive from the end of July.

Seriously, no-one seems to notice that there's a serious problem and they just assume the tourists will still come for the summer. This was the first ever year that some hotels on the Costa del Sol actually closed for the winter season - it's usually a year round destination.

Spaniards are still asking top money for the properties they want to sell even though prices have fallen around 40%. They just say they'll wait until someone pays the 'right' price but with all the properties the banks have to offload that could be a very long time. Even rents over the summer aren't being dropped and they'd rather leave places empty than take a lower amount. I know of someone that wanted to rent for 3 months but can't find anyone to rent to him for less than 6 months.

So the sun is shining and everyone just acts like there isn't a problem.

By the way, under 25s have 45% unemployment!

I hope so.

All that's been going on for the past decade (at least!) is a massive wealth transfer to the elites from everybody else.

There's a major class war going on right now but it still seems to be mostly hidden. The media like to hype the claim that it's all because poor people bought houses or middle class people ran up their credit cards too much going on fancy vacations or cops' pensions are too generous. Not because of reckless lending by banks, or derivatives or tax evasion or real estate speculation at the high end of the market or too much growth in supply vs demand.

Spanish trade union announce general strike
English.news.cn 2010-06-14 22:05:55 FeedbackPrintRSS

MADRID, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Spanish trade union Comisiones Obreras on Monday announced a general strike in protest at the government's labor reform.

The Spanish government will on Wednesday pass its labor reform by decree following the failure of talks with the union and the employers' organization.

The reform is aimed at making the labor market more flexible and to stimulate the creation of new employment, but the unions view it as an attack on workers' rights as it will now be a lot cheaper for a company to make people redundant in the face of any fall in demand.

The union head of communication, Fernando Lezcano, announced that the date for the strike would be made public on Tuesday.

The opposition party(Popular´s Party, conservative) is announcing that is not going to support the general strike.

Re: Breaking News: GENERAL STRIKE TO HIT SPAIN
background: i have lived in spain for over 25 years.

the newspapers say the strike is planned for sometime in September or October. it's basically a one day protest, in which the unions will claim that everyone stayed home from work, and the government saying that only maybe 30% stayed home.

Spanish productivity is extremely low. Basically a lifestyle issue. they have had the split work day 9-2 (large lunch + siesta) then 5-8 (or thereabouts) since the nineteen thirties. there is talk about switching back to a northern european 9-5 day. probably won't happen. change is hard and Spaniards are proud of their cultural differences with the north.

How much lower pay would you suggest? Minimum monthly wage here is €630.00 per month and the minimum monthly rent where I live is €400.00 per month for a 2 bedroom house or apartment. Then of course you need to run a car to get to/from work, pay utility bills, buy food and clothe the kids.
