Re: Minnesota getting hammered by tornadoes right now.
The greatest risk to lives and property lies across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest tonight, where a tornado outbreak is unfolding for Thursday evening.
Tornadoes and hail have already been reported in Minnesota and North Dakota. Millerville, Minn. reported 4.25 inch hail, while a large with debris was confirmed northwest of Grand Forks, N.D.
There are also other areas that can be hit by locally damaging thunderstorms in the Tennessee Valley and southern Plains Thursday night.
Situation Serious Over Northern Plains

The risk of strong, long-tracking tornadoes stretches from Iowa to the eastern Dakotas, much of Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. The risk area tonight also extends into neighboring southern Canada.
Large hail, flash flooding, frequent lightning strikes and straight-line wind gusts can also lead to damage and life-threatening situations.
The risk of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes Friday will encompass much of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and the Upper Michigan Peninsula.

MINNEAPOLIS - A tornado watch has been issued until 9 p.m. for a large portion of the FOX 9 viewing area, including the Twin Cities metro.

Tornado touch down

Storm chaser Peggy Willenberg (Twister Sisters) reported a tornado touch down near Wadena, Minn. shortly after 5 p.m.

Storm forecast

A widespread severe weather event will unfold across the outlook area into Thursday night. There is a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms across the entire outlook area. The main threats from this activity are expected to be tornadoes, strong damaging straight-line winds, large hail and locally heavy rainfall.

The most likely area for tornado development is across the Minnesota portion of the forecast area, particularly from Morris to Little Falls and in a corridor southward to Redwood Falls to Owatonna, including much of central and south central Minnesota.

The thunderstorms are expected to evolve into more of a squall line by early to mid-evening, with damaging winds and large hail being the more likely threats. The storms will move into west central Wisconsin by mid-evening with a continued possibility for damaging winds and large hail. Individual storm motion is expected to be in the northeast at 25 to 30 mph, with larger storm complexes and lines of storms expected to move east at 40 to 50 mph.

Are there any tornadoes hitting the Thief River Falls area in NW Minnesota? I'm a worried daughter in California with a mother recovering from surgery at the hospital.

Thief River Falls was under three or four tornado warnings already, but no reports of a touchdown anywhere in Pennington County.

Thanks soooo much for the update. I feel better. Any additional news for the NW corner of MN (Halma, Karlstad, Kennedy, and Lake Bronson) and Grand Forks, ND, would be appreciated.

Thanks
