GLP Survey Results: Approximately 75% Say Doom For At Least The Gulf And Possibly Beyond
POLL: How will this situation play out?
Relief wells will stop the leak
Leak won't stop but clean up will be managable through technology
The Gulf area will become unihabitable to life
The Gulf and areas beyond will be uninhabitable to life
 The worlds oceans are doomed
 Other
 Blank (View Results)

A similar event happened in the late '70's that was managed and forgotten about.

What about this leak?

Are all resident doomers here just overreacting?

Or have we really done it this time?

------

MONDAY MORNING UPDATE

I guess the real lesson of the disaster unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico is that if we want to continue to live life the way we have been...

Surrounding ourselves with petroleum based products...

Then we're just going to have to sacrifice the beauty of the Earth in order to maintain this reality.

We need to find a better way...

NOW!

Personally I voted that the leak won't stop and that technology will be able to manage the situation.

But then again those who know me well know what an optimistc fool I can be.

Prayers and good thoughts sent to all of those pinned down in this trajedy.

sorry forgot to say... don;t get me wrong this is a terrible thing and changes must be made. This is by no means a world wide disaster.

the only thing that concerns me is the current. There have been oil spills which were worse, were they effected by a current like the gulf stream?

With the pressure that the well is supposedly under, I'm thinking that they got into something way over their heads.

If there is technology that is hidden from the public that would assist in managing the clean up, hopfully it will be forced out by the increasing public pressure.

Might be just wishful thinking on my part though.

Can not wait till it is stopped via the relief wells.

Lunatics all over this site making it 1000x worse than it actually is.

Same deal in 1979 went on for 9 months, if GLP was around back then and 24-7 news it would be a carbon damn copy.

No long term doom came of that one, nor will it from this one.

whatever

Mother nature is also pretty darn good at cleaning this stuff on its own over time.

If the relief wells work ... the Gulf will be kinda back to a kinda normal in about 24 months AFTER the well is plugged, though it will take at least 10 to get back to an 85%-90%.

IF the relief wells do NOT work ... well the end of the gulf coast as we know, probably for my lifetime (I am older).

WHY do you think these relief wells will be able to contain the pressure of the deposit they have tapped into?

Afterall, THIS well failed... are the relief wells different, better, new & improved, or are the fuck nuts in charge of getting the CEO his BONUS just going to do it RIGHT this time?

I guess what I'm saying is that after this on-going clusterfuck, I have VERY little confidence that BP or maybe ANY oil Co. can fix this mess...

Your thoughts?

Yes, if the pressure of the well is really as high as they say it is (30k to 70k psi), then it makes perfect sense that the relief wells will be useless.

However keep in mind that they are unsure themselves of what the actual well pressure really is.

I don't think any of us watching from the sidelines has the ability to make a measurement.

We are trusting them on that bit of info.

Maybe it's bs?

I have a very bad feeling about this. Like I had on 9/11 and then after, watching things unfold which brings us up to this day. Perhaps like some have said 9/11 was some kind of mega ritual which opened some kind of portal of death for our country. who the fk knows.

This is unlike any other oil disaster...

And the downright contempt shown by our govt. and bp as to proper cleaning up rings as truly bizarre to me.

I am simply numb with anger and sadness.

Could you go into a little more detail about what happened in 1979?

Where did the spill/leak occur? How did they stop it? What, if any, were the long term affects of the oil in the local environment?

I don't know for sure how many relief wells were used to stop the Montara spill. I do know it was more than 2. I hope these relief wells do stop the leak but I'm not holding my breath.

Edit: got confused on my spills for a sec.
