A similar event happened in the late '70's that was managed and forgotten about.

What event?

They say that where the Valdez spill was is still fucked.... though I've never been there. This just seems to be so much worse than that. I'm not "doomy" by nature but this shit seems really fucked up!

It really looks like they can't stop this gulf gusher.

What needs to be done now is go onto plan B. Which is building giant funnel and sucking machines to gather the oil as it come up. This gulf oil disastor gusher probably alone could supply enough oil for the world for 20 years. So they could just shut down all other oil drilling all over the world.

The isotox(spelling) gusher. But it was only in 150 feet of water. And didn't have the mass that this oil field has.

Other,
the gulf coast middle class will be broken.

I don't know for sure how many relief wells were used to stop the Valdez spill. I do know it was more than 2. I hope these relief wells do stop the leak but I'm not holding my breath.

Can not wait till it is stopped via the relief wells.

Lunatics all over this site making it 1000x worse than it actually is.

Same deal in 1979 went on for 9 months, if GLP was around back then and 24-7 news it would be a carbon damn copy.

No long term doom came of that one, nor will it from this one.

whatever

Mother nature is also pretty darn good at cleaning this stuff on its own over time.

Could you go into a little more detail about what happened in 1979?

Where did the spill/leak occur? How did they stop it? What, if any, were the long term affects of the oil in the local environment?

Here's a thread on the 1979 spill for starters...

I wish people would stop calling this a "spill." A spill is more like what happens to a glass of milk.

Unfortunately I think this thing will keep gushing until it runs out of oil, or the sea bed collapses and shuts it down, whichever comes first. Either way that area and a lot of area near it are probably going to be uninhabitable for probably hundreds of years. After man is gone/depleted, I have faith in Mother Nature to heal herself eventually.

Hey Sparky, you better get out your calculator and run the numbers...

The 1979 IXTOC spill dumped 140 million gallons into the Gulf.

Using a figure of 60,000 barrels day, which I think is WAY lower than reality- it adds up like this:

60,000 x 42 = (barrel of crude is 42 US gallons) 2,520,000 gallons of oil per day.

This is day 60:

2,520,000 gallons of oil per day x 60 days = 151,200,000 gallons so far.

We have already exceeded the IXTOC spill.

There is no end in sight, and this is likely to go on for several more months. There is NO guarantee the relief wells will even work because oil is now leaking from fissures on the sea floor. If the relief wells fail we are likely to wind up with *billions* of gallons of oil in the Gulf.

We may be lunatics, but you're a dumbass. Now STFU.

Re: GLP Survey Results: Approximately 75% Say Doom For At Least The Gulf And Possibly Beyond
ELE due to the way the Gulf will be for DECADES at a minimum...not be what it was...

but Mother earth is very good at correcting mans errors and eventually will-so all people will not die, but this is still spewing and they are still drilling more relief wells and I think those will cause more problems IMHO even with the facts that logically seem to support that needs to be done...I sense it is contributing to more pressure coming down in the area of pressurized gases...

As it continues...even if they stop it 10 months out or further...the Corexit is deadly and killing all life of any kind in the sea where it contacts...worst than the deadly crude over all...at least mother nature allows the crude to stick together...with a chance of retrieval...but the dispersants are deadly in and of themselves...and they are dispersing throughout the ocean...where the currents are much stronger(like 4+ times stronger)and dispersing the oil even further out throughout...which is unwise...nature could do that without any help...and less deadly as well.

The methane building up(and Natural gas) seems to be a real Bottomless pit, according to scientific readings(like underground sonar)...not good-Not at all

and while all this is destroying ecosystems they speak of more wars...and more resources set to kill

Surely this is insanity??? And to trust the company with a trashed safety record, and the one that caused this to save a few millions...with profits of 93 million or more a day, is negligent and shows a malfeasance towards the people that seems quite purposeful

Tony Hayward, is disgusting

He wants his life back rofl He should be grateful he still has a life at all-millions have already died...and people to follow-His PhD is not worth toilet paper as he sold out LONG ago-walking dead, hairpiece and all.

and they care about the "small" people...I bet they do...they care for the small people to pay for their lavish lifestyles of privilege and dishonor...

No comparison to Ixtoc

Additionally, bottomless pit brits have several areas of concern and more than one plume of oil coming ashore...they also have had allegations that they have had a problem with this GUSHER from before the blow out on the rig...and cut corners every chance they got-with the safety record they have...we better look for all the other blow outs, gushers, SPEWING barrels of oil daily

BILLIONS of gallons...that has yet to stop with minimal recovery and Coast Guard interfering with clean up operation of the people(UNDER BP ORDERS???) And we are to behave and wait for the investigation to be completed before we what???

dynamite

As far as I am concerned, the people of this country NOW OWN bp...without the government corp stepping on our toes-they have been COMPLICIT ENOUGH

The HAMMER is about to drop...

best stay clear of it...I would leave the Gulf now, even with massive loss.

before more losses are incurred.

FAIL

That leak took nine months to cover 1,100 square miles. This leak covered 29,000 square miles of ocean as of March 28th (less than 6 weeks.)

In other words, this leak is 200 times greater, and it's miles deeper which makes it many times harder to stop!

Can i just say that I just watched that video on MSNBC on the 1979 gulf oil spill...and it is in NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM anywhere even close to the disaster that is unfolding in the gulf now... how long did the 1979 oil leak last for...ONE TO TWO WEEKS...... you can claim this is all the same thing ...but when u wake up one morning and your neighbors are wearing gas masks...
