I always assumed this to be true because it never made any sense. Scientists basically said:
"Since our physics imply the universe is expanding, we need something to explain it so we'll just make it up."

But if I'm reading what you posted correctly, it means 2 things:

1) Red shift no longer is a viable "measuring stick". Which implies...

2) Our assumptions about space body distances are wrong.

If those are true, then doesn't that also mean we have no idea how far away objects really are? I thought red shift was part of the way we measure distance in space.

If I am right, then everything we think we know about space could be incorrect.

But maybe I'm missing something here (I am tired)...

You are right on track. And that's also what many scientist do...they try to explain these 'unsolvable' mysteries through math formulas and tagging a name to the formula so it gets put in the science journals. They claim that since the math works, then it must be true, even though it does not make sense in physical (real-world) application.
