EDMONTON - A home in north Edmonton exploded early Sunday afternoon.

The explosion occurred at 180A Avenue and 91st Street around 1 p.m.

Police have erected barricades blocking off vehicle access to the area. It’s unclear so far how many people have been injured and what the extent of the injuries are.

One woman wearing a neck brace was seen being wheeled into an ambulance on a stretcher.

Kim Drozak lives three blocks south of the explosion. She said there was a loud boom and her house shook around 1 p.m. She and all her neighbours ran into the street to see what happened. She ran toward the sound of the explosion and could see black smoke high in the air and one house in flames.

Nearby residents are being evacuated by emergency services.

Home explosion on northside

Emergency officials suspect a meth lab

By EDMONTON SUN

A home explosion has created what one witness called "pandemonium" at 91 Street and 179 Avenue.

Two homes have been destroyed.

Officials have not confirmed deaths or the number of houses burnt down. However, there has been speculation by emergency officials on scene that the fire was caused by a meth lab explosion.

Military officials, police officers, emergency services, and multiple fire trucks have completely blocked off road access to the area of Lakeview. The perimeter of the area has been completely closed off. ETS is presently on scene providing people water.

Area resident Debbie Winter is frantic as she waits for a phone call from her son, Brad, an occupant of one of the homes.

She said she has not heard from him since the blast.

Neighbour Caylee Webber described the scene as chaos when the home erupted, "I was sleeping and thought a bomb went off," Webber said. "Honestly, there were chunks flying everywhere and people flooded into the streets." Military personnel have also been assisting with the evacuation of residents.

Yet people do this.

I was a pretty crazy partier growing up, I tried almost everything under the sun. I never could understand meth. I never even wanted to try it, seeing how most people turn out who do it.

Same here...fortunately I'm on the west end. Sounds like it was a lab...there's an APB out on some guy that's missing.

This explosion was 1800m from my house, so a little more than a mile. It was --not-- a meth lab, nor an explosive device. Most likely a natural gas explosion which do occur on occasion.
