ALERT - Abnormal Radiation Detected Near Border -(SKorea/NKorea)
Abnormal Radiation Detected Near Border, but SKorea says NKorea did not conduct nuclear test.

I Find this article worrying on various points:

1) North Korea may be telling the truth about a nuclear technology breakthrough.
2) "South Korea subsequently looked for signs of a powerful, artificially induced earthquake .."
3) "... xenon could have come from Russia or China" (Is Russia and China still conducting Nuclear tests??)

Re: ALERT - Abnormal Radiation Detected Near Border -(SKorea/NKorea)
Could it be from the volcano on the N.Korea/China border??

"I wanted to also mention a brief article I ran into on the Changbaishan/Baekdu caldera along the Chinese and North Korean border. Although short on specifics, this article mentions a number of interesting (and potentially odd/wrong) things: (1) Baekdu is showing signs of "becoming active" - this is the first I've heard of that, but the article does mention increased seismicity, inflation of 10 cm since 2002 and an increase in surface temperature; (2) the North Korean government is creating "comprehensive countermeasures" in case of an eruption - I have no idea what this means, it almost suggests they want to come up with ways to stop the eruption, which is ridiculous; (3) that the recent North Korean underground nuclear test might have had an effect on the magmatic system at Baekdu - and this strikes me as 100% pure speculation. The volcano has a caldera lake at the top, known to the Chinese as the "Lake of Heaven" and a Korean-speaking population living around the edifice. If Baekdu were to erupt, it would be a very large problem for North Korea's already teetering economy and government - the eruptions tends to be explosive with the last coming in 1903. However, Baekdu/Changbaishan did likely produce a VEI 7 eruption ~1000 A.D., meaning any activity at the volcano should be closely monitored (which could be difficult with its location on the Chinese-North Korean border).

No, not xenon. Radioactive xenon is not naturally ocurring in any meaningful amount.

Re: ALERT - Abnormal Radiation Detected Near Border -(SKorea/NKorea)
From South Korean website, this is from their english pages.

[link to english.chosun.com]

On May 14, two days after the North's announcement, air analysis of KINS's radiation detection station in Geojin, Gangwon Province showed about eight times as much xenon as in ordinary times, a government official said. "Authorities concerned have concentrated on analyzing this," he added.

Like krypton, xenon is a gaseous radioactive matter that is produced as a result of nuclear fission. It is regarded as the surest proof of a nuclear test because it does not interact chemically with other matters.

Seoul detected increased concentrations of xenon a few days after Pyongyang conducted a nuclear test in North Hamgyong Province in 2006.

Re: ALERT - Abnormal Radiation Detected Near Border -(SKorea/NKorea)
Reminds me of something i read in the quatrains written by Nostradamus i always thought that it meant a nuclear exchange of some kind in the far east..it just says "No one in the West shall see those in the East perish" or something like that.
My first thoughts when i read it were, and this was years and years ago, of N. and S. Korea.
North Korea has a nuke somewhere close there and is planning on using it against South Korea, that is where the radiation is coming from.

Not likely.

I'd put money on an accident at their reprocessing plant. But they've done a good job keeping it quiet, talking about a fusion breakthrough when they're really dealing with burned workers and contamination all over the ground.

SKs would be smart to monitor the rivers, that's where the evidence will be.

I dont know that much about dirty bombs, only that they have a small explosive capability but put out allot of radiation in a smaller area. I wonder if they produce an EMP? I never really thought of that before, i mean, if a dirty bomb could cause an Electro Magnetic Pulse?
