Anyone know if this is true about potatoes and sucking out poison??????!
I may have a spider bite and am wondering if this story is true, my mother is a nurse and said back years ago, that people used slices of potatoes to place over bite to suction out the poison........

Ever heard of this???

I don't know about potatoes but plantain will.

I steeped on a yellow jacket last summer and picked some plantain from the yard, chewed it into a paste and put it over the sting with a band-aid. The next morning I refreshed the treatment and by mid day it was totally gone with very little pain.

Baking soda and water will work on bee stings...potatoes will absorb salt if you over salt a soup...could work on bites and stings...wouldn't risk it on a snake bite though...
Poor people do poor people things, and rich people do rich people things.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

when you rob Paul to give to Peter ... ... ... you will always get Peters support!

I have heard that before about potatoes but don't know if it works. I have used mustard before for bites (and burns) and it takes pain away. I learned that from a cook at a restaurant that I had. He used it on burns from the grills and said that it worked for insect bites also. It takes away the pain so would guess it draws out the poison also.

Plus on a GLP thread about brown recluse bites a couple of people claimed raw bacon dressings work.

Re: Anyone know if this is true about potatoes and sucking out poison??????!
I just got a pretty bad bite last week...I think it was a spider that got me.
I made up a baking soda paste and put that on it, wrapped a piece of toilet paper around it to keep the baking soda in place.
It seemed to work pretty well...
I figured the baking soda might help draw that poison back out, before it spread too far.

I have heard of using potatoes and plaintain for a 'cooling, soothing effect"...like to help cool a burn, or around your eyes for puffiness.
A heat drawing thing, more than a poison drawing thing..

You can give it a try, it won't hurt anything..just might not work the way you want it to.

This site has many different treatments for spider bites [link to www.earthclinic.com]

Also, have you lookined in calcium bentonite. You place wet clay over the bite and wrap it up to keep it wet.

leave the peel on, but it's more a peel with a little meat of potatoe. Then the poison will be extracted through the potatoe to the peel. When the inside meat of the potatoe is completely black, it has done it's job.

if you wrap your feet in a poltice of thinly
sliced potatoes they will draw large amounts of
toxins from your body.

OT but timely:

I live in PNW and saw a spider last night that I've never seen before. Wonder what it was and if it's poisonous.

It was about an inch across, small body was black with white diamond-like shape on top.

Very beautiful spider (which is why I thought it might be poisonous), but freaked me out a bit.

Great, I saw Cabbage Leaves. Ive heard it used for head aches, Swollen Joints (Knees, ankles, shoulders, wrists, elbows)

Pick out some appropriate sized cabbage leaves. You must crush or bruise there skin up a bit. Try a wooden kitchen hammer. Layer cabbage leaves on area, and bandage them to hold, in contact. For uselessly over night. Aaha the Magic of Kapusta (Cabbage)

It has to be a very fresh bite. After 20 minutes or so the poison has spread and will not be drawn out.

I have first hand knowledge on this...... dried out mushroom, when the shaman did it it was peyote, but i doubt theres any difference at all between what he used and an edible mushroom, mushrooms are a fungus and they seek out moisture, get a dried out edible mushroom and gring it into a powder, put it on the wound with a bandage over that to hold it in place, make sure you dont get the mushroom wet works better when its dry. trust me itll work! i got bitten by a brown recluse and after healing a barely noticable scar and best of all it worked in a 24 hour period.

Interesting. That would explain why the tomatoes I planted over last years potatoes are doing so badly compared to those planted elsewhere.

Onions also work to draw out toxins and keep the area sterile. Old Hawaiian medicine. Be cautious with spider bites, their poison can eat the tissue around and beneath where they bite. A friend has a 1/2 inch hole where a spider bit him years ago.
When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained.

Potatoes and Tomatoes are both in the Nightshade Family...
So basically, it's like planting the same thing there that you did last year.
Should always rotate crops from differant plant families...
Maybe snow peas over where the potatoes and tomatoes were last year( they help rebuild the soil), something from the Legume Family.

Re: Anyone know if this is true about potatoes and sucking out poison??????!
Yes. Brother in army showed me when I got bit.You cut the end off of the potato. The potato sucks out the
poison. Step 1.) hold the potato end on affected area.
Step 2.) use pressure, and leave on for 5 mins. after 5 mins you should see a dark ring around the middle of the potato end. Step 3.) If not apply longer. In all my cases this has worked. However if this does not work for you and you are having sever symptoms or bruising please go to the nearest E.R.
