Let me guess:
we're screwed because it is growing on its own with a DNA we don't understand yet and therefore have no way of controling its growth?

I dunno.

I'll be out of doom-range for a number of hours. Will try to hook back up later today.

World's largest telescope to be completed in 2011 in Antarctica

The construction of the world's largest neutrino telescope, worth $271 million, will be completed in 2011, the Russian federal space agency said on its website on Thursday.

"The telescope's size exceeds the overall height of the Empire State Building, the Sears Tower in Chicago and the Shanghai World Financial Center," Roscosmos said.

The project's purpose is not to study the stars, but the Earth's depths.

huh? really?

[link to en.rian.ru]

Wonderder if it is an INFRARED one? If so I am pretty sure I know what it is looking for!
 Quoting: Childoflight 505529

The telescope will be looking for neutrinos from the most violent astrophysical sources, such as star explosions, gamma ray bursts, and cataclysmic phenomena involving black holes and neutron stars.

Neutrinos are the smallest known subatomic particles, which became a subject of research in the 1950s. Neutrinos travel at near the speed of light and are so tiny that they can usually pass through solid matter without colliding with atoms.

The IceCube telescope will be equipped with some 5,000 Digital Optical Modules buried under the ice at depths of 1.4-2.5 km. (how do they place them there?)

The modules will transmit experimental data for 25 years.

OK, why would the subs be having such a problem with this stuff, yet the ROV's seem to be swimming in it and are doing ok? Unless it is the cargo itself which is drawing said fibers to the hull? I don't see how anything biologic could be able to transmit some sort of homing/drawing beacon. What is the freaking cargo!?

Also, how many folk are the usual compliment for a sub? We now have 8 dead, 3 (I think) already transported off several days ago, so they are down 11 men? Anyone w/ experience in this area know if this is credible for sub operations?

Re: Something Just Went BEZERK in the Gulf of Mexico. The US Navy just sunk a French Submarine
Found my confirmation of why they are claiming it is an oil spill...

Territorial waters only extend to 12 miles from the shore, but the Exclusive Economic Zone extends to 200 miles.

Apparently I am late to the game, this deep seabed mining issue has been around for decades and the UN has had conventions based solely on this issue. It all makes sense now though, why all the foreign ships in the Gulf, why Obama refused access... THEY KNOW WHAT IS UP. The other countries aren't fooled by this 'oil spill' and it also makes sense why they would use military to protect the site. The US and BP know they are deep shit for this.

[link to www.whoi.edu]

To regulate seafloor mining, in 1994 the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea spawned the International Seabed Authority, or ISA, an independent treaty organization. It has jurisdiction over the seabed outside the exclusive economic zones that surround nations’ shorelines—an area it efficiently calls The Area. The term refers only to the seafloor, not to the waters above it (they’re called the “high seas” in legal parlance). The rules dictate that the ISA make licensing decisions and, remarkably, that a portion of all profits from mining in The Area be used to benefit the world’s developing countries.

If it is a Class 212 sub (which by the way is pretty much the same sub that the French are using) it has a compliment of 27, 5 officers 22 enlisted. And the German version has an 'antimagnetic' hull.. Hmmm.

sub hulls are hydrophobic by design to better hydrodynamics thus fuel efficiency/speed

maybe thats why the fibers are attracted to the hull

Actually being magnetic is bad, so they run degaussers over the hull and the newer boats have them built in. Magnetic is bad.

Re: Something Just Went BEZERK in the Gulf of Mexico. The US Navy just sunk a French Submarine
What we have here gentlemen is a space compression/decompression device. It could be used to cause what you call gravity to put pressure on a large land or subsea area. If damaged and forced out of alignment, the spurious radiation and motion displacment even on a molecular level would be very bad. The body will only last so long. If the crew is losing weight fast, that is a clue.

A true doomsday weapon. Dangerous as hell.

Fiction or fact

From what I can gather, the metals used in the hull + travelling through seawater + earth's natural magnetic pull + propulsion system creates the magnetization of a sub.

NOW, what is causing the DEmagnetization and resultin corrosion is the $64K question.

critical situation with hull ... . ,
hull demagnetizing issues getting irreversible , crew feeling disorientated, do isotope readings on ports side where the metallic fiber flocking was worst and growing

(polkadots = SE)

Demagnetising subs

[link to www.phys.unsw.edu.au]

To make the situation even more tricky, often it is desirable to actually set a particular magnetism into the hull of the vessel. This is done with the intention of having a permanent magnetism in the ship or submarine that will automatically oppose the induced magnetism (from the Earth’s magnetic field) at the zone of operation. This scenario places an even greater demand on the skill and specific knowledge of those scientists and technicians operating the equipment.

The aim of my PhD project was to bring a more scientific approach to the problem. In doing so I have looked at various theories of magnetism in materials and also constructed a scale model of the Navy’s magnetic treatment facility (MTF) where deperms are performed. Investigations included: looking at how the shape of a ship or submarine determines how it gets magnetised; how much influence magnetic cargo has on the vessel’s magnetism and, most importantly, scientific alternatives to the present deperm process. One possible alternative was tested on the model MTF in the lab. It was actually based on the way media like computer disks are bulk erased in the magnetic recording industry. This process is known to physicists as “anhysteretic magnetisation”.
