Let's say that the microbe is of the type that concentrates gold and reproduces by budding as stated by someone earlier in the tread. It coats itself with gold and then pushes out a bud that forms a new organism, leaving the original to die in its own gold coffin. So, why only gold? What if this bugger is doing it to gold and Uranium? Radioactive, which wil play hell with electronics and the magnetics of the sub, and kills insidiously. Definatly something that you would want to jettison if it is leaking hard radiation and/or a deadly bacterium. I can see that the crew would find that important enough to get back to France. I can see why the US Navy would attack a freindly power over it too. Concentrated pure Uranium. The stuff of dreams. Talk about cheap power. Just separate it from the gold an biologicals and voila'. Energy galore. Hell yes the US would want to keep that secret, and all to themeselves. The cure for oil dependancy right there.
