This came to me in the middle of the night:

If the sea floor really is ruptured in several places - and if the only way to stop the flow is to n/u/k/e it - the very high risk is triggering a methane explosion as well, it would seem, due to the intense heat of the explosion, even at that depth.

So if the decision is made to n/u/k/e, then they would have to evacuate the coastal areas in case of an explosion-generated tsunami ahead of time. So an evacuation order would be a prime indicator that they planned to n/u/k/e even knowing that it could set off a chain reaction with the methane. At that point, those opposed to such an action (N/a/v/y?)might attempt to block all efforts to take such a step (coup?).

He stated that the coastal states might then have to be cleared out within two months latest ("full evacuation").

I'm assuming that something that has happened here is a mistake - something got out of control - whether it was drilling in this particular spot, adding nanotech, releasing some alien microbes from the depths, inserting synthetic microbes or whatever, and the Corexit is an attempt to deal with what has been unleashed. If that fails, then they go to the glass-the-floor strategy...a huge risk.

It seems like they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. Greed may have inspired the initial chain of consequences, but now they have real potential doom to resolve - or not.
