July 15, 2010: NASA-funded researchers are monitoring a big event in our planet's atmosphere. High above Earth's surface where the atmosphere meets space, a rarefied layer of gas called "the thermosphere" recently collapsed and now is rebounding again.
"This is the biggest contraction of the thermosphere in at least 43 years," says John Emmert of the Naval Research Lab, lead author of a paper announcing the finding in the June 19th issue of the Geophysical Research Letters (GRL). "It's a Space Age record."
The collapse happened during the deep solar minimum of 2008-2009—a fact which comes as little surprise to researchers. The thermosphere always cools and contracts when solar activity is low. In this case, however, the magnitude of the collapse was two to three times greater than low solar activity could explain.
"Something is going on that we do not understand," says Emmert.

Haarp pushing the atmosphere higher? we've lost a lot of the atmosphere.
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1037779Could be - but I think HAARP gets blamed for waaaay too much stuff that is purely 'natural'. By the way, it was my magazine that published the first ever article on HAARP, back in the early 90s - so I do know a fair bit about it.
The 'picture' I get from various inside sources that have any knowledge related to anomalous events - is that TPTB KNOW that big changes are coming in the very near future - that involve the magnetic field, ocean currents, earth crustal displacement, etc.
I get the impression, that installations such as HAARP exist as much to 'dampen' the severity of such events, as they do to further understand the science behind it.
And yes, I am aware that given HAARPs abilities, that such technology could be, and probably is being, used for social control and manipulation purposes, weather/climate control etc etc.
Don't forget, a really BIG earth changing event is not in the interests of TPTB either - they NEED to reduce the severity of anything they know is coming - if its possible. Otherwise, they use any crisis to further their various agendas.
