Report: Israel planning to attack Hezbollah arms depots in Syria
The Kuwaiti newspaper Al Rai reports that Israel is preparing to strike Hezbollah targets in Syria; Al-Arabi Al-Quds reports that western diplomats have asked Bashar Assad to refrain from interfering with Israel-PA direct peace talks.

Ugh!
This weekend Russia announced it plans to continue sales of the P-800 Yakhont supersonic cruise missiles to Syria. These are nasty babies to detect and intercept.

Also, Russia plans to upgrade a naval base site near Syria's Mediterranean port of Tartus so that it can accommodate heavy warships after 2012.

(lots of interesting news out of Russia this week)

i found this one more interesting (reading between the lines in reference to this thread)

Putin slams West for deceiving Russia

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has accused western countries of using unfair political methods including deceit and breaking promises to obstruct the process of "resetting" relations between Russia and the West.

In an interview in Kommersant daily, Putin said his speech at the 2007 Munich Security Conference, which several western politicians considered a declaration of reviving the Cold War, was still relevant, as many western countries are unfair in their dealings with Russia.

"At time of the withdrawal from East Europe, the NATO secretary general promised the USSR it could be confident that NATO would not expand over its current boundaries," Putin said.

"And where is it? I asked them [NATO officials] about this. They have nothing to say. They deceived us in the rudest way."

Russia-U.S. relations face a lot of problems, Putin said. "We had just come to terms that there would be no missiles [NATO missile defense systems] in Poland...but it was suddenly announced that the same [missile defense system deployment] was planned for other European countries."

......

does HMS stand for 'her majesty's service'?

just like to know who's finger is on the trigger of these apocalypse boxes

Oh, yes. I like this question. We've seen posts about "factions" of the Crown, and I guess that means "Her Majesty."

We know we have "factions" of government in the USA, outside of regular political parties, but I know very little about the UK government.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 969968

"Crown", "Her Majesty's Government", "Realm", "Whitehall", and other terms like that all mean the same thing, the entity that runs the UK. The Queen is the Head of State, she formally sanctions everything that happens, but in practice it is the civil servants, the politicians, the armed forces and so on who run the country on a day to day basis.

If the politicians want to pass a law, first they debate it amongst themselves in the House of Commons, where all the members are elected by the common man on the street. The bill is then passed onto the House of Lords, who are an unelected body of politicans, but generally retired former Members of the House of commons as well as former generals, admirals, bishops, dukes, etc plus any other people given a life peerage. The Lords will cast their experienced eye over the bill, correct any spelling mistakes etc then pass it back to the House of Commons who will debate it again, vote on it and if it passed, it will go to Royal Ascent. this means the Queen has to sign the bill saying it is now law. This is how it works here, everyone else does the all the drafting and debating then the Queen gives her seal of approval, she won't get involved in the day to day nitty gritty.

Everything is done in her name, all government property is Crown property, everything from Job centres to Naval dockyards is crown property. Whenever you see "HM", "HM Government", "Royal" and other words like that, it means the UK Government. It's all one and the same.

Yes, there are factions within the Government, you have Labour and Conservatives at one level; at another you have the Army against the Royal Navy or the Army agianst the Royal Air Force or the Navy against the RAF; then you have MI5 against MI6, or the Foreign Office against the Ministry of Defence; or the Police against MI5 and MI6; Oxford against Cambridge; Eton against Harrow, socialists against fascists and so on.

where does the Gulf of Mexico fit in with all this, i've no idea, it's not necessarily which faction does BP belong to, more which faction do the people running BP belong to. I would guess their faction is the City of London, if that is correct, then what is going on in the GoM is probably just good old fashioned greed, just like the Falklands. And the crown will turn a blind eye where possible, because if BP makes a lot of money out what ever it is down there, that means more money pouring into Crown coffers. Lovely Jubbly.

Chinese 'Carrier-Killer' Missile Could Reshape Sea Combat

[link to www.foxnews.com]

"When complete, the Dong Feng 21D -- a version of which was displayed last year in a Chinese military parade -- would give China the ability to reach and hit U.S. aircraft carriers well before the U.S. can get close enough to the mainland to hit back.

A nuclear bomb could theoretically sink a carrier, too, assuming its sender was willing to raise the stakes to atomic levels. The conventionally armed DF 21D's uniqueness is its ability to hit a powerfully defended moving target with pinpoint precision.

The emerging Chinese anti-ship missile capability, and in particular the DF 21D, represents the first post-Cold War capability that is both potentially capable of stopping our naval power projection -- and deliberately designed for that purpose," said Patrick Cronin, senior director of the Asia-Pacific Security Program at the nonpartisan, Washington-based Center for a New American Security.

Details of the missile are still unknown, and the county has yet to test the system. Yoshihara said China would need to rely on a range of technologies to track boats and guide the warhead to a moving target like a carrier."

Dont know if OP ment this ORCA,
but a few pages back there were articles posted that refered exactly to the bolded text ....

ORCA [link to www.oceanrecon.org]

With support from the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, private foundations and conservation-minded individuals throughout the country, ORCA is using the latest technologies to develop high tech sensors and communication systems capable of detecting a wide range of water quality parameters, both chemical and biological, critical to keeping our waters clean and habitats healthy. These systems report back to ORCA’s scientists and resource managers, so better solutions can be implemented against threats to healthy marine ecosystems.

Other ORCA's :

- Orka 1200 VTOL UAV, is a joint tactical VTOL UAV system for European army and navy. helicopter-airframe developed by Eurocopter and Guimbal Helicopter, it is equipped with an EADS mission system.
[link to www.airteamimages.com]

- Indian-Military.org:orka 1200
Besides Northrop Grumman’s Fire Scout, the other contenders could be EADS’ Orka 1200, Boeing’s Hummingbird and Israel Aerospace Industries’ (IAI) Malat’s NRUAV. But besides the Fire Scout, the navy understands the others to be still under development. The navy had a chance to consider the Austrian Schiebel’s Camcopter but has deemed it to small to match its requirements.
[link to www.indian-military.org]

- Canadian Forces' Orca (PCT 55), an 'Orca' class patrol vessel of Canada's navy, Orca Chief and BC Ferries' Quadra Queen II sit at Point Hope Maritime on Victoria's Upper Harbour

- ORCA Navy is a professional Electronic Chart System (ECS) for military purposes that provide dedicated functionality for displaying S-57 AML data as well as GeoTiff images. It also integrates all the functions required for safe navigation using electronic charts.
[link to www.sevencs.com]

- The ORCA (Oceanographic Remotely Controlled Automaton) is a semi-autonomous air-breathing vessel that is used for oceanographic surveys. The Mapping, Charting and Geodesy Branch of NRL and C&C Technologies, Inc. in Lafayette, LA, constructed and instrumented two of these vessels in the 1994-1998 period. One vessel was used for advanced concept development and the second was transitioned to the Naval Oceanographic Office for Hydro graphic surveys. The ORCA was also used as the concept testbed for development of the RMS(O), the Oceanographic variant of the RMS (Remote Minehunting System, AN/WLD-1).
[link to www7440.nrlssc.navy.mil]

- Case History of Orca Basin: Recording the Marine Reflection Wavelet for Deconvolving Marine Seismic Data
In 1973, Shell recorded for deconvolution purposes the far field wavelet over a silled basin in the Gulf of Mexico. This place, named Orca Basin by Texas A&M and Navy oceanographers in 1977, is the largest of several known silled basins on the Sigsbee Slope having an isolated horizontal reflecting boundary in sea water. This boundary provides a way to record a low noise far field wavelet that includes the effects of all elements of the seismic system. The objective of deconvolution is to remove the seismic wavelet from the reflection trace, leaving only an earth function trace. Initially, the recorded wavelet was inverted and used directly to deconvolve marine seismic data. This produced superior results to other deconvolution methods of the time. Five years later, the far field wavelet recorded from a deep towed hydrophone was proven to yield deconvolution results comparable to those obtained with the salinity interface wavelet. The Orca Basin series of field experiments provides a definitive validation of the deep towed hydrophone technique which is now widely used by the marine seismic industry.

I mean we could argue all day as to what the OPs codes are and post yonks of info. I wondered as to the blocks of players as in EU, USA, Russia, and China along with all the others.
We know the GOM is ruined along with all the countless lives both human, and animal. Surely it is not for monetary gain. I have tried to put those concerned into their various roles, but it came out wrong on reading back of it.
