Ok just got off the phone with ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio™
1) YES, EMP's will affect all electronics. Older stuff (ie: radios w tubes) they think might still work.
2) #1 being said for emergency two things that will keep you in the loop with info are a scanner (local level info) and a SW radio WITH sideband
3) local Ham operators can be o-o-led in your neck of the woods. Some are involved with ARRL and some are not. ARRL is into emergency operations.

as an a side, when I asked about EMP's this well versed gentleman's I was speaking with said with a very concerned voice "Why do you think something bad is going to happen?"

More as I find it...

WOW, 1221, that's great info! Is a sideband an option to select any station as opposed to preset stations? And what does o-o-led mean? No surprise about older technology working. Wish I had one of those puppies!

Very intriguing image dhlos!! If you zoom in on those boxes you get more detail, but I still can't figure out what it is.

The image is titled 'rim highway'

Does "rim highway 1 and 2" work?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1047611

I'm just sayin, the image title under properties is

'RIM HIGHWAY'

Thread: Who is level3.com?

Wow thats interesting. If level 3 went down it would take everything else with it, i would think.

BEZERKERS-

Lots of info today got me thinking about pre-planning for an alternate means of communication. I'm out of my realm on the specifics, but if someone knows...are there any Ham operators among us? Is there a frequency we could listen to? And is it a short wave radio thats needed?
Any thoughts/ideas would be appreciated :)

If someone will decide on a frequency and post, I'll contact a couple of local HAMs. We are rural, but sometime get info because of a nearby nu clear power plant here in Southeast US.

Very good...I'm gonna do the same...getting SoCal in the loop.
