There is nothing sinister about the £1.2billion HMS Astute running aground, it just didn't have up to date charts!

Who is in charge of ordering charts for this vessel?

No Loran on board subs?

Tide charts/tables not navigational charts. I think it was a matter of having to be at the dock at an unfortunate changing of the tide. Orders from above trumped conditions of nature - sounds like the military to me.

I totally agree Tutu! The left hand did not know what the right hand was doing!
I work in a building that was planned by a well known architectural company. The problem was that one branch planned the inside and the other the outside. When the hospital who commissioned it decided that the building should be downsized the message got to the branch doing the outside but not to the one doing the inside. As the structure was being built the site inspector began an affair with a lady in the main campus! It was only when walls began to intersect windows that they noticed they had a problem!!!!!Yes this is true and shows what happens when we rely on machinery and not the grey matter between our ears. This sub does not have a periscope in the old fashioned sense of the word!

And, evidently, no one was paying attention to the depth finder, if it was even turned on at the dock. The tide charts still would have been the thing, in this case, IMO. The timing of the embark/disembark of personnel suggests some kind of urgency, since this tide chart information was totally ignored. The more I think about it, the less I can believe that submariners would make this kind of basic mistake unless there were extenuating circumstances. I know - I've been all over the place on this issue, but it raised a lot of red flags for me, being an old salt and all.
