Quantities are measured in tonnes of crude oil with one tonne roughly equal to 308 US gallons, or 7.33 barrels, or 1165 liters. This calculation uses a median value of 0.858 for the specific gravity of light crude oil; actual values can range from 0.816 to 0.893, so the amounts shown below are inexact.

One listed as on going

Am a few pages behind, found this regarding spill On great Barrier Reef in 3 April...

[link to www.amsa.gov.au]

Seagrasses are a vital component of many near-shore areas of coastal Australia, providing habitat and food for a
variety of marine, estuarine and beach-dwelling animal species, as well as being important in the nutrient cycle
of near-shore and foreshore areas.
Oil spills may affect seagrasses either by direct smothering
or by toxic effects of the water soluble fraction of oil.
Although Australian approved Oil Spill Dispersants rate
predominantly as “slightly toxic” to “practically non-toxic”
by the International Maritime Organization GESAMP
classification system, there is limited knowledge on the
specific effects on seagrasses exposed to dispersants.
The use of dispersants may also increase the exposure of
submerged seagrasses to oil as dispersed oil enters the
water column.
To address the knowledge gap on the impact on
seagrasses exposed to oil spills, AMSA entered into a
funding agreement on behalf of the National Plan with the
University of Technology Sydney (UTS). The National Plan
also provided in-kind support and technical advice to the
research team. UTS contributed additional funding and
were also successful in securing an Australian Research
Council Industry Linkage grant to expand the project.
The UTS researchers used a combination of laboratory and
field experiments to compare the toxicity of several oils and
dispersant/oil mixtures on seagrasses, and to provide advice
on the best approach to the use of dispersants on oil spills
in the vicinity of seagrasses.
In this work, the toxic impact of oil and dispersants on three
temperate seagrasses Zostera capricorni, Zostera muelleri
and Halophila ovalis was measured. A range of experiments
were performed in the field, and in the laboratory using
whole plants and seagrass leaf sections.
Seagrasses were exposed to the water accommodated
fraction (WAF) of Tapis Crude oil and IFO-380 (Intermediate
Fuel Oil) produced with and without the addition of
dispersants, Corexit 9527, Ardrox 6120 (for dispersing the
Tapis Crude oil) and Corexit 9500 and Slickgone LTSW (for
dispersing the IFO-380).
The findings of the study were that non-dispersed oil, in
general, leads to less photosynthetic stress to Zostera
capricorni and Halophila ovalis compared with the addition
of a chemical dispersant. Zostera muelleri did not appear to
be negatively impacted by either dispersed or non-dispersed
Tapis crude oil. In most treatments, where photosynthetic
stress was detected in the seagrasses, full recovery was
evident prior to the conclusion of the experiment, whilst in
other cases recovery occurred within the ten hour exposure
period.
In conclusion, when the addition of a chemical dispersant is
deemed necessary to protect other resources in the area,
the seagrass may still recover depending on the dispersant
used. Contact AMSA for further information.

I have just watched the BBC story on "The Great American Oil Spill" curious title. An impressive piece of spin if even there was one. Apparently what has come to light from this enlightened yarn is that:

1. The oil has for the most part gone. 2. Fishing is being allowed again and they ate craps to prove it. 3. People are swimming in the Gulf waters with no ill effects. 4. The people have never had it so good with all the money BP have given them.

They did get a BP rep to say he did not know how much oil was still out there, sort of. If fact that was the overriding message. No ones knows but hell its OK as its out of sight.

Maybe I am being harsh but I came away feeling dirty and disappointed. :- Mud

If so you missed an important point. The BP rep said

"There is a new microbe that is eating the oil"

Stephen Fry just went "oh"

And they moved along.

Is the age of oil over. It seems that nature gives us what we need at each step in social evolution. But at this time due to mankind's quest for power and control we have abused what mother has given us. Due to greed an desire for power certain technologies have been suppressed that would afford us the next step in this evolutionary precess. These technologies would place in our hands the abilities to take the next step on the path toward living in more harmony with nature, and eliminate the archaic technologies that currently are contributing to destruction of the planet. Planetary population is not the problem, its the management of what we have been given that is, by a few who seek to control and manipulate the population for selfish and greedy reasons.rken

Now this is what we need to see more of!!
Power of the people!!!! Hope more of the Gulf area people start protesting too. Their lives and livelihoods have been ruined.

As a sidenote - the cams were on for a few days, the bop was removed (with a huge amount of crud spewing out of it), there was more cement poured into the wellhead and onto the sea floor around it. Then, in the wee hours of the morning, a Memorial Cap was placed on the wellhead. (I was watching the cams until after 11:00 pm (Pacific) and nothing was happening, next day BeePee posts his video, so I can only assume the cap was put on in the wee hours.)

Wouldn't this have had more of a positive impact (for BP) if they had done this during evening hours and had media coverage? What an opportunity they missed. lol

And now once again the cams are not working. gaah

wonder what would happen if you turned off all tv's all cell phones, etc..anything that would conduct and I too thought of a tinfoil hat...over your ears?..or ear plugs?...or is this a strictly mental thing...and I too, thought about all the top people being out of the country...kinda convenient, no?...guess we'll see, won't we?..he said 8/9 pm...but I didn't see which time zone that was...if it's eastern that's 5/6 for me..

we, imo, are electrical and magnetic impulses...probably no way to combat something like this..except through mental strength...oh...and comcast most certainly does have cell phone service..some on the thread doubted that...but it's true...

According to another poster's info from the thread:

In short, the way you prevent this stuff from altering your brain is to fill a bathtub full of ice and put your head in. Or jump into a mountain lake. Or find a crazy cat lady and raid her stash of Clozaril.

[link to www.bariumblues.com]

The most parsimonious process by which all human brains could
be affected would require (1) the immersion of all the
approximately 6 billion brains of the human species within the
same medium or (2) a coercive interaction because there was
facilitation of a very narrow-band window of vulnerability within
each brain. For the first option, the steady-state or "permanent"
component of the earth's magnetic field meets the criterion. The
possibility that masses of susceptible people could be influenced
during critical conditions by extremely small variations (less
than 1%) of the steady-state amplitude (50,000 nT) of the earth's
magnetic field such as during geomagnetic storms (50 to 500 nT)
has been discussed elsewhere (Persinger, 1983). Recent
experimental evidence which has shown a threshold in geomagnetic
activity of about 20 nT to 30 nT for the report of vestibular
experiences in human beings and the facilitation of limbic
seizures in rodents is consistent with this hypothesis.
The potential for the creation of an aggregate process with
gestalt-like properties which reflect the average
characteristics of the brains that are maintained with this
field and that generate the aggregate has also been developed
(Persinger & Lafreniere, 1977) and has been labelled the
"geopsyche." This phenomenon would be analogous to the vectorial
characteristics of an electromagnetic field which is induced by
current moving through billions of elements such as wires
contained within a relative small volume compared to the source.
Such gestalts, like fields in general, also affect the elements
which contribute to the matrix (Freeman, 1990).
The second option would require access to a very narrow limit
of physical properties within which all brains are maintained to
generate consciousness and the experience of self-awareness.
This factor would be primarily loaded by the variable of brain
temperature. Although the relationship between absolute
temperature and wavelength is generally clear [an example which
can be described by Wien's law and is well documented in
astrophysics (Wyatt, 1965)], the implications for access to
brain activity have not been explored. The fragile
neurocognitive processes that maintain consciousness and the
sense of self normally exist between 308[degrees]K and
312[degrees]K (35[degrees]C and 39[degrees]C). The fundamental
wavelength associated with this emission is about 10 micrometers
which is well within the long infrared wavelength.
However, the ratio of this normal range divided by the
absolute temperature for normal brain activity which maintains
neurocognitive processes is only about 0.013
(4[degrees]K/312[degrees]K) or 1.3%. If there were a subharmonic
pattern in naturally occurring or technically generated magnetic
fields which also reflected this ratio, then all brains which
were operative within this temperature range could be affected
by the harmonic. For example, if 11.3 Hz were one of these
subharmonic electromagnetic frequencies, variations of only 1.3%
of this mean, i.e., 11.3 Hz +/- [plus or minus] 0.1 Hz, would
hypothetically be sufficient to affect the operations of all
normal brains. If this "major carrier frequency" contained
biorelevant information by being modulated in a meaningful way,
then the effective intensities could well be within the natural
range for background radiation (microwatts/cm2) and could be
hidden as chaotic components within the electromagnetic noise
associated with power generation and use.
One of the major direct prophylactics to the effects of these
fields would require alterations in core (brain) temperature
such as deep but reversible hypothermia. However, this condition
would disrupt the biochemical process upon which neuronal
activity and hence consciousness depends. Treatments which
precipitate alterations in neural activity, similar to those
which are associated with crude hypothermia, would be less
disruptive. Specific candidates which affect multiple receptor
systems such as clozepine (Clozaril) and acepromazine could be
possible pharmacological interventions.
