Anonymous Coward User ID: 1146667 Poland 11/09/2010 12:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to en.citizendium.org] Since submarines are the original stealth platforms, they are natural platforms for bringing signals intelligence SIGINT antennas close to targets. When no more than a mast breaks the surface, they immediately become radar targets, so virtually all modern submarines will have the minimum ELINT of a radar warning receiver. Far beyond that, however, many submarines will penetrate hostile areas, raise SIGINT receiver masts, usually with some type of radar-observant covering, and listen. Especially sophisticated SIGINT submarines may tap undersea cables. The minimum radar-warning receiver is usually a set of spiral antennas, backed with resonant cavities, whose amplitude can be compared to determine the direction of greatest signal strength. To go to the next level of sophistication, phase is considered as well as amplitude, and interferometry adds further information.[1]. On other boards, there has been much conversation as to why it could not be the USN or USAF - mainly because of the close proximity to LA... and the absolute silence regarding a planned launch into a heavily-trafficked civilian air space. We would never risk a misfire that could easily land on LA. They also say that it could not be an accidental US launch, as a missile launch of that size requires the coordinated actions of a team, not just an accidental button push. It seems more like a warning shot - this time we sent our missile west, into the sea. Next time, from your doorstep, we may send it east, into population centers. |

But, surprisingly, not during the last few weeks. Yesterday and today have made up for that, and they are flying in pairs. Wish I could track them. This thread is HARD to keep up with... so I apologize if this next reference is a duplicate. [link to www.sciencedaily.com] Nov 1 Mystery of ‘Alien Pod’ Solved: Colony of Freshwater Bryozoans 'The final consensus was that the organism is Pectinatella magnifica -- the "magnificient bryozoan." That identification is itself somewhat surprising, as the vast majority of bryozoans -- thousands of species -- live in salt water. Marine bryozoans are common but inconspicuous filter feeders that grow in thin, encrusting colonies atop rocks, kelp blades, shellfish, and other hard objects. When the individual animals extend their tentatcles to feed, the colony takes on a fuzzy appearance, hence the bryozoans' common name of "moss animal." One study even showed that young colonies of P. magnifica can actually move on their own by coordinated pulsing of the individual animals. Although individual bryozoans are built on a simple plan -- a U-shaped gut inside a bag-like body with no lungs or gills, and no circulatory or excretory system -- they are true survivors, with a fossil record that dates back some 500 million years.' They came up with that explanation pretty quickly. Odd that the explanation was released on Nov 1 and the sighting info was released November 2. |
