In 2006, Venter bought a boat called the Sorcerer II, to travel the oceans in search on new forms of genetic species. Some of those samples included the Gulf of Mexico.

Besides the Dept of Energy being one of the major funders, another major player is Gordon Moore. Gordon Moore, is once CEO of Intel. Moore, is also an exclusive alumni of Berkeley in California, which recieved a $500 million grant from BP to study algae based fuels.
