Planetary dynamo Helffrich says that the lighter elements may be getting concentrated in the outer core as the inner core solidifies. What's more, he speculates that as the light elements rise to the surface of the core, their motion drives a dynamo that powers Earth's protective magnetic field. Researchers have worried in the past about what keeps the dynamo going, says Helffrich. But the rise of light elements "releases a huge amount of gravitational potential energy". ... Models of the Earth's core may need to be modified, says Buffett, and further observations could help to clarify Helffrich's result. Feinberg’s facility administers the $20 billion fund established by BP to compensate individuals and businesses for economic losses caused by the oil disaster. Feinberg has spoken of “generous” settlements and quick turnaround on claims, but many locals find fault with his process, especially now that so many claims have been turned down en masse over the past several days.

All in all, Feinberg has denied 173,000 emergency claims, and compensated 158,000 (though often not at the full amount requested), totaling more than $2.3 billion paid out so far. 80,000 more emergency claims remain under review, and will be approved or denied by December 15th. November 23rd was the deadline for filing these short-term emergency claims, which cover up to 6 months of lost income. Feinberg waited until after that deadline to reject more than 100,000 claims that had been "under review," which explains the surge in rejected claims since then. @ BHD ... this next story reminded me to your note of that white border of something on the seafloor ... only this is not white but oil ... Image: [link to www.newsvine.com] -Obama bans eastern Gulf drilling for 7 years Thursday, December 2, 2010 [link to bpoilslick.blogspot.com] Washington (CNN) -- President Barack Obama will not be allowing new drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico for at least seven years, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced Wednesday. The exploration of drilling possibilities in sensitive areas of the Arctic will proceed "with utmost caution," he said. Obama's decision effectively reverses White House plans announced at the end of March to open the Gulf region -- along with other large swaths of U.S. coastal waters -- to oil and natural gas drilling. Under the plan, roughly two-thirds of available oil and gas resources in the eastern Gulf would have been opened to drilling. Areas located within 125 miles of the Florida coast would have remained off limits Last Edited by Krispy71 on 12/08/2010 06:16 PM |

He alleges that large sections of the seabed beneath the Gulf of Mexico have been destabilised by the extensive oil and gas drilling operations taking place there. Furthermore, the Deepwater Horizon explosion created numerous fractures in the already unstable rock strata and now, in his words, “the Gulf of Mexico is slowly but surely filling up with oil and gas”. On top of that, because of the depth of the oil and gas deposits, they contain high concentrations of radioactive isotopes. To add to the problems, the chemical dispersants — which he claims are still being used underwater near the well head (see image, below) — are making a very serious problem a lot worse. These chemicals are themselves highly toxic, but even worse… they are reducing the oil droplets to a “micronized or nano-sized state”. This significantly increases the likelihood that large quantities of mildly radioactive crude oil is entering the food chain. As Dr. Termotto says, this is turning “an extremely serious regional disaster into an unmitigated global catastrophe”. |

Commenting on the well, Stephen Phipps Chairman of Desire said, "Having seen the highly encouraging results from the first logs, the LWD, PEX and CMR, on this well, plus accompanying oil shows, it is extremely disappointing that the subsequent wireline logs and fluids sampling have dashed all the earlier promise of this being Desire's first oil discovery in the North Falkland Basin. Despite this setback, the presence of hydrocarbons and good reservoir development have been identified in a number of the Rachel fan sands and we therefore continue to believe in the prospectivity of the East Flank Play fairway for future oil discoveries." [link to ijs.sgmjournals.org] Snip: Abalones were harvested by the fishery industry near Hobart, Tasmania (4 ° 55' S 14 ° 20' E), in February 2006. An aerobic, Gram-negative bacterial isolate, strain DSM 19503T, was isolated from haemolymph serum of the blacklip abalone Haliotis rubra. Cells of strain DSM 19503T were vibrioid to spiral, motile and were able to pass through sterile filters with a pore size of 0.2 µm, indicating the small width of the bacterium. The isolate was psychrophilic, with the ability to grow at 2–8 °C. Oxidase activity was present, whereas catalase activity was absent. The nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain DSM 19503T was obtained and phylogenetic sequence analysis showed that it formed a distinct genus in the family Oceanospirillaceae with highest sequence similarity of 92.9 % to Oleispira antarctica RB-8T. The cellular fatty acid composition was dependent on the growth medium used for cultivation. During growth on seawater agar, the fatty acid composition was most similar to that of Oleispira antarctica DSM 14852T, with mainly C16 : 0 (90.3 %). In contrast, Columbia blood agar/NaCl-grown cells exhibited mainly C10 : 0 3-OH (11.8 %), C12 : 1cis5 (8.2 %), C16 : 1cis9 (29.6 %), C16 : 0 (19.3 %) and C18 : 1cis9 (13.1 %) fatty acids. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data, strain DSM 19503T is considered to represent a novel species in a new genus for which the name Oceaniserpentilla haliotis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The proposal has been greeted with cheers by many in Alaska who've been waiting to move into the new offshore frontier of the Far North, but conservationists warned that more studies should have been done before including the Arctic in the administration's 2012-17 Outer Continental Shelf leasing plan. “It is disturbing that Interior proposes to evaluate including the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas in the 2012-2017 five-year plan, despite a severe lack of information and an inability to clean up oil spills in Arctic conditions,” a coalition of the nation’s biggest environmental organizations said in a statement. “We will proceed with utmost caution,” Salazar said, adding that “cautious, limited exploratory activities” can help improve scientific understanding of the remote, little-known region. He said no new leases would be offered before 2013, and even then, they would proceed only after comprehensive studies of environmental impacts and oil spill cleanup capabilities. In one of the most closely watched developments, Officials also said they were proceeding with a final environmental assessment for Shell Oil’s proposal to drill at least one exploratory well in the Beaufort Sea as early as next summer, which would be the first substantial new drilling in U.S. Arctic waters in many years. That announcement was applauded by Shell, whose more ambitious program to drill several wells in both the Beaufort and Chukchi seas has been held up in the courts by conservation and Native Alaska groups concerned that oil operations in one of the world’s most fragile environments could lead to disaster. ... The Arctic has been one of the most important battlegrounds for future new domestic oil development. On one hand, it contains what the U.S. Geological Survey has described as possibly the “largest unexplored prospective area for petroleum remaining on Earth.” Yet the risks of an oil spill in its icy, often-stormy waters are formidable, and conservationists are concerned that taking areas of the Atlantic, Pacific and eastern Gulf of Mexico off the table will lead the oil industry inevitably northward. “There is now more pressure on the Arctic Ocean,” said Marilyn Heiman, director of the U.S. Arctic program for the Pew Environment Group, which along with other groups has called for more study of how the cleanup technologies that worked only partially in the Gulf of Mexico can be brought to bear in a frozen region that is 1,000 miles from the nearest Coast Guard base. “I think the question is, what is the pace at which they will do it, and where. The decision about if, when and where to hold these lease sales will be key,” she said. |
