China, not a member of the Arctic Council that determines Arctic policies, is actively searching ways to reap economic and strategic benefits from the ice melting despite having no Arctic coast, and hence no sovereign rights to underwater continental shelves there. The emerging giant is assessing the commercial, political and security implications of a seasonally ice-free Arctic region. It has allocated more resources to Arctic research. The country owns one of the world’s strongest polar scientific research capabilities and the world’s largest non-nuclear icebreaker. China is building a new high-tech polar expedition research icebreaker, planned to set sail in 2013.

U.N. council split on North Korea statement: diplomats

The U.N. Security Council met in emergency session on Sunday to try to cool tensions on the Korean Peninsula, but the five big powers were split on whether to publicly blame North Korea for the crisis.
Pyongyang raised an alert for artillery units along its west coast in what appeared to be its latest move in a growing crisis between the two Koreas, Yonhap news agency said, quoting a South Korean government source. The report was issued ahead of a planned live-fire drill by South Korea.
South Korea's Defense Ministry offered no immediate comment on the Yonhap report. Bad weather has so far delayed the planned firing drill at a disputed border that has enraged Pyongyang.

Isis, when and where were these pictures taken? The insulators on the telephone poles cause that picture to appear to be a number of years old.

Last night I watched Jesse Ventura's show on Harpe. Just a thought here - couldn't Harpe be used to repair the Gulf Stream.

As a side, the show was very interesting and Harpe is very firghtening.

This article brings an international aspect to the gulf, it may have been posted before, if so, I missed it, sorry if already posted.

I found it listed in a search on Ocean Development & International Law

Listed as Marine Policy and Law

[link to www.harteresearchinstitute.org]
 Quoting: Isis7

Linking through the site, we discover that Norway has had a carbon tax since at least 1991 and that Statoil, the Norweigian oil and gas company, has stored carbon in order not to be charged the tax.

Statoil is one of the oil companies involved with BP in SERPENT, which is doing nano-bio research in the Gulf of Mexico.

The rull article makes it clear that there are unknown long-term effects of dealing with a "CO2 bubble" 1000 meters below the sea bed in the North Sea.

"...the Sleipner Project, which started up in 1996. It is the first commercial application of emissions avoidance through the use of carbon capture and sequestration technologies. The Sleipner oil and gas field, operated by Statoil, is located in the North Sea about 240 km off the coast of Norway. In order for natural gas drawn from the site to meet commercial specifications, its contaminant CO2
concentration must be reduced from about 9% to 2.5%. This is a common practice at gas fields worldwide in which the CO2 captured from the natural gas is vented to the atmosphere. At Sleipner, however, CO2 is compressed and pumped into a 200-m-thick sandstone layer, the Utsira Formation, which lies about 1000 m below the seabed. One motivation for doing this was the Norwegian offshore carbon tax, which was then about U.S.$50/t of CO2 in 1991 (the tax was lowered to $38/t on Jan. 1, 2000).

About 1 million metric tons of CO2 (equivalent to about 3% of Norway’s total annual CO2 emissions) have been sequestered annually at Sleipner since October 1996. The incremental investment cost for sequestration was about
$80 million. Solely on the basis of carbon tax savings, the investment was paid back in about one-and-a-half years."

Russian scientists are reporting that the Earth’s core has experienced a mysterious ‘shifting’, as yet for unexplained reasons, but has caused near simultaneous earthquakes in both the countries of Indonesia and its antipodal counterparts of Panama, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

Require Shell to clean up its mess in Africa before allowing Royal Dutch Shell to have access to a pristine egological system.

At the link:

"It's important to understand what Congress did with OPA 90 [the Oil Pollution Act of 1990]. The backbone of it is that the industry will clean up its own oil spills—with oversight from Coast Guard experts, but industry is responsible for doing the cleanup, providing the equipment and paying for it. So Shell would take the equipment up there that would be necessary should the worst happen.

"To enter the Arctic Ocean from the Indo-Pacific where commercial traffic would enter from China, the only entry point is the Bering Strait, which separates Russia from the United States. It was known as the "Ice Curtain" during the Cold War, and is now being referred to as the Bering Gate. The Strait is a narrow choke point only 52 nautical miles wide with a depth of 30 to 50 meters. There are three possible international shipping routes once a vessel enters the Arctic: 1) The North East Sea Route or Northern Sea Route along the Russian coast (NSR), 2) the Transpolar Route and 3) the North West Passage (NW Passage) through the Canadian Arctic archipelago. BP Oil on Gulf Floor Draws Concern

The report leaves unanswered many questions about the spill's environmental impact that scientists are likely to be researching—and BP and the government are likely to be fighting over—for years.

For instance, officials sprayed some 1.8 million gallons of chemical dispersants on the oil to break it up and prevent it from washing ashore. In some sediment, tests found a chemical contained in dispersant, but its environmental impact is unknown, the report said.

Hi Krispy haven't seen you in a while.

Nice vid on the atlantic current. The question is if it is stopped due to the gulf oil spill or the warming in the nothern latitudes. There is evidence that it has stopped and reversed before. It had been reported that it was slowing prior to the gulf spill. Another earth change that they can blame on the gulf oil spill I suspect. Just a thought. rken

When I was in Russia, they had a way of telling how cold it was. Seems like if you spit and it froze (Crackling sound) before it hit the ground, it was colder than -60 I believe. If it hit the ground and then froze it was only about -35 or something like that. They had a whole system worked out on that basis down to like -100. Tells you how much there is to do in Russia in the wintertime.

A new power on the high seas... China to build its first aircraft carrier as Britain scraps hers

[link to www.mailonsunday.co.uk]

China is preparing to build its first aircraft carrier – as Britain’s once-proud Royal Navy shrinks to its smallest size since the days of Henry VIII.

The Chinese move comes weeks after David Cameron axed Britain’s carrier fleet and halved the overall number of warships to 25.

Even though two super-carriers – HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince Charles – are being built at a cost of £5.6 billion, China’s naval plans will see it dwarf the UK’s dwindling power as a seafaring nation.

The Chinese will launch their first carrier in 2015

Weekly water samples are being analyzed for enteric bacteria that normally inhabit the intestinal tracts of humans and animals, and may cause human disease, infections or rashes.

The presence of enteric bacteria is an indication of fecal pollution, which may come from stormwater runoff, pets and wildlife and human sewage. Poor results are posted as an “advisory” at the affected beaches.
