The country owns one of the world’s strongest polar scientific research capabilities and the world’s largest non-nuclear icebreaker. China is building a new high-tech polar expedition research icebreaker, planned to set sail in 2013.

U.N. council split on North Korea statement: diplomats

The U.N. Security Council met in emergency session on Sunday to try to cool tensions on the Korean Peninsula, but the five big powers were split on whether to publicly blame North Korea for the crisis.
Pyongyang raised an alert for artillery units along its west coast in what appeared to be its latest move in a growing crisis between the two Koreas, Yonhap news agency said, quoting a South Korean government source. The report was issued ahead of a planned live-fire drill by South Korea.
South Korea's Defense Ministry offered no immediate comment on the Yonhap report. Bad weather has so far delayed the planned firing drill at a disputed border that has enraged Pyongyang.

Isis, when and where were these pictures taken? The insulators on the telephone poles cause that picture to appear to be a number of years old.

Last night I watched Jesse Ventura's show on Harpe. Just a thought here - couldn't Harpe be used to repair the Gulf Stream.

As a side, the show was very interesting and Harpe is very firghtening.

Linking through the site, we discover that Norway has had a carbon tax since at least 1991 and that Statoil, the Norweigian oil and gas company, has stored carbon in order not to be charged the tax.

Statoil is one of the oil companies involved with BP in SERPENT, which is doing nano-bio research in the Gulf of Mexico.

The rull article makes it clear that there are unknown long-term effects of dealing with a "CO2 bubble" 1000 meters below the sea bed in the North Sea.


"...the Sleipner Project, which started up in 1996. It is the first commercial application of emissions avoidance through the use of carbon capture and sequestration technologies. The Sleipner oil and gas field, operated by Statoil, is located in the North Sea about 240 km off the coast of Norway. In order for natural gas drawn from the site to meet commercial specifications, its contaminant CO2
concentration must be reduced from about 9% to 2.5%. This is a common practice at gas fields worldwide in which the CO2 captured from the natural gas is vented to the atmosphere. At Sleipner, however, CO2 is compressed and pumped into a 200-m-thick sandstone layer, the Utsira Formation, which lies about 1000 m below the seabed. One motivation for doing this was the Norwegian offshore carbon tax, which was then about U.S.$50/t of CO2 in 1991 (the tax was lowered to $38/t on Jan. 1, 2000).

About 1 million metric tons of CO2 (equivalent to about 3% of Norway’s total annual CO2 emissions) have been sequestered annually at Sleipner since October 1996. The incremental investment cost for sequestration was about
$80 million. Solely on the basis of carbon tax savings, the investment was paid back in about one-and-a-half years."

BP Oil on Gulf Floor Draws Concern
