Well, the subs are really the only covert way that foreign nations could get a look at the damage to the sea floor.

If something other than the fractured sea floor and the spewing oil was discovered, which led to the bezerk warning, then the subs were the 'front' to which the phenominon were observed.

If the Frenchies did try to take away some of the organism, or as I am starting to think, the same liquid that is beneath the ice in Lake Vostok which is able to create life from pretty much anything, then who ever was guarding the site, would possibly have tried to stop removal.
