Toxic 'canisters' wash up on Sydney beaches. Beaches closed.
"Authorities have
'no idea' where the 40 + aluminium canisters containing a toxic substance (aluminium phosphide) have come from, only that people should stay away from them".

Sydney and the Gold Coast are on the Eastern sea board of Australia, facing New Zealand.
The news services have oh so short memories....
The small containers have come out of a larger shipping container that
fell off the 'Rena'.
JFTR, I contacted AMSA (maritime safety) about this, and the fella I spoke to actually said "Oooh, of course!! why didnt we think of that? Thanks mate!".
So there you go, bezerk has made a positive real time contribution to the environment.
Will it be reported as such. Time will tell.
PS - I bet Krispy just spat out her morning coffee when she read
canisters.... LOL. It's not 'them' K, but some 40cm aluminium storage vials.
Quoting: BadHairDay Follow up on this -
I recieved a call from AMSA, regards my email and phone call.
The gentleman was quite short with me, and mentioned that they had ruled out the Rena as being the source. It was, apparently the first thing they thought of. In fact 'impossible' was the word he used, citing that currents would not allow anything to travel from the tip of NZ to East coast OZ.
"For that to happen, the container would have done a full lap of the Pacific. Impossible. It would get caught up in the gyre.
Besides, the Rena was not carrying aluminium phosphate, or anything harmful, a side from the recycled oil.
[really?.... how about the ferrosilicate??]
So, thanks for your interest, but you are incorrect".
"We believe it came off a ship during a recent storm. Have you contacted any news services with this information? Have you spoken to any one else about this, out of interest? Have you seen or do you have one of these canisters?"
BHD - "Nope..."
"Good, good. OK, I just thought that I would do you the courtesy of a phone call
to clear this up."
WTF?!!!! Bit creeepy!
